Pico is looking for a Director of Engineering to join our fast-growing, mission-driven team. We believe that a strong democracy requires a robust Fourth Estate. As a manager joining our team, you should feel comfortable wearing multiple hats, getting your hands dirty in the codebase, working collaboratively with the company's founders, and demonstrating empathy toward direct reports and customers alike.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the company founders on long-term strategic planning and goal setting
• Establish best practices and shape the engineering culture of our company
• Grow, teach, and lead a team of engineers
• Conduct regular performance reviews of engineers

Qualifications:

• Computer science degree or equivalent work experience (10+ years)
• Experience managing teams
• Experience mentoring and coaching engineers
• Experience building high-volume applications (10,000+ requests per minute)
• Strong JavaScript skills and experience with ES6
• Experience with Node.js and React.js
• Strong knowledge of HTTP and RESTful API services
• RDBS and NoSQL experience, particularly MariaDB
• Experience with Elasticsearch and Kibana
• Experience with AWS or other IAAS platforms
• Experience with Docker or other containerization technologies
• Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment
• Experience with test-driven development or behavior-driven development
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, especially when articulating complex and technical concepts to non-technical audiences

Bonus (experience with any of the following):

• Experience with organizational design and scaling an engineering team
• Experience working in the journalism or digital media industries
