Director, Infrastructure Engineering

New York

At Oscar, we are re-envisioning healthcare by bringing technologists and industry experts together. We believe that great technology can revolutionize the operations and infrastructure underlying today’s healthcare and insurance systems, and is key to delivering transformative experiences for our members and the medical experts who provide their care. Oscar engineers work on some of the most challenging problems in tech - helping users navigate the complex health industry through beautiful user applications, elegant distributed system design, making sense of noisy data, statistical learning, and language theory. We invest in our people, our tools, and our processes so we can focus on solving big problems while learning from one another.

Position Overview:

As the Director of Infrastructure Engineering you will be primarily responsible for curating, communicating, and executing against our vision for infrastructure development. You will be directly responsible for multiple infrastructure engineering teams, including a technical product management function, and for building the group from 15 to 25+ over the next year. Your teams will also work collaboratively across the organization to accelerate our development efforts and enhance the overall operability and stability of the systems we develop.

Responsibilities Include:

Cloud network and infrastructure management: Oversee AWS account management, network topology, edge architecture, network security, infrastructure provisioning via Terraform and Ansible, and management of vital systems such as DNS.

OS configuration and provisioning: We primarily utilize Ansible and Packer for building, configuring and securing our Linux EC2 environment.

Infrastructure and application identity & access management: Using AWS IAM, Hashicorp Vault, and Oscar’s OIDC provider, thread together a logical and consistent approach to authentication and authorization for both humans and machines throughout the stack.

The Build and deploy lifecycle: A custom continuous integration system as well as artifact creation, collection, and deployment

The application platform: Job scheduling (we primarily use Mesos & Aurora), containerization, storage systems (RDS, S3, BigQuery), monitoring & alerting (Prometheus), service discovery (Consul & Zookeeper), data streaming (Kafka), etc.

Base library and tool development: Library support for best-practice integration with our infrastructure and the development of self-service tooling and critical infrastructure components.

Policy: Policies, implementation, and execution related to incident response, technical compliance (we are a HIPAA-compliant environment), the production lifecycle, and disaster recovery

On-Call: You and your teams will be on call for the systems you own, but not the systems developed by other engineering teams - at Oscar, the team that builds it is the team that runs it.

About You:

  • You have 10+ years of infrastructure engineering experience, including end-to-end responsibility for complex and mission critical infrastructure development initiatives.
  • You make the people and teams around you better through mentorship, collaboration, and guiding developers towards best practices.
  • You can help us attract, build, and retain the best engineering talent in the industry.
  • You believe that team performance is even more important than individual performance, and have a track record of building high-functioning teams.
  • You understand the “inclusion” part of Diversity & Inclusion and can help us improve and maintain a great culture where the best ideas prevail.

Above all else, you demonstrate:

  • A friendly, thoughtful, and kind approach
  • Humility, maturity, and lack of ego.
  • An open mind, while ready with a point of view.
