The Role:

As the Director of Quality Engineering you will cultivate a healthy quality culture across our Tech team and nurture solid technical foundations in the creation of a product that excels in meeting the needs of teachers and students. You will make technology recommendations that enhance the validation and certification of the following: WCAG AA Accessible; Mobile-first Responsive; PWA compliant; and performant on a wide ability of devices, in addition to being loved by teachers, students, and administrators alike. As a leader of our Quality Engineering team, you will also ensure the creation of comprehensive test cases documentation that is reflective of current functionality, strengthening the verification & validation testing matrix that includes supported browsers & operating systems in addition to accessibility requirements. Additionally, you will develop, implement and assist the Product and Tech teams in delivering high quality web applications at scale, and will collaboratively execute the high level product strategy including specific roadmap deliverables at negotiated delivery milestones. You’ll continue to build our culture of learning by providing close mentorship to your team of developers as needed, and regular one-on-one’s, all to ensure you’re growing your team’s technical skills and interests.

You will be shaping the product to ensure that beautifully designed features are shipped to Newsela’s national user base. You’ll help lead your team to work on big problems in k-12 education, from building the infrastructure necessary to handle tens of millions of users to solving novel problems in text complexity and personalization. You’ll also be instrumental in building a quality engineering culture that values teaching, learning, and questioning.

Why We’ll Love You:

With 10+ years Quality Engineering leadership experience in medium- and large-scale software-as-a-service industries, and 3+ years of director-level experience within a cloud-based organization, you have a history of building design-detailed, highly usable products. You have a certain amount of rigor that supports the validation & verification processes that meet the users needs by providing positive outcomes. You’re empathetic to not just your peers but teachers and students. You consider the wide variety of devices that our users may choose to use, to ensure that Newsela’s feature/functionality is performant and usable on our supported devices. Expertise with test automation tools (e.g. Selenium, Cypress) and frameworks, as well as advanced performance analysis experience are required as you will establish our end to end Quality and Performance strategy. In addition to your technical skills, you’re a passionate people leader, with experience building and growing a team of quality engineers.
