Engineer: Observability Applications

As a Software Engineer in our Observability Applications team, you’ll develop full-stack applications built to help teams make sense of their services. The OA team is a small, autonomous group that works in tandem with the Observability Platforms team to highlight the performance and reliability of critical products and services within DO. From distributed data systems and pipelines of significant scale to performant web applications consumed by people all over the company, you’ll find interesting challenges to tackle every day.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Designing, writing, and running applications that provide visibility into how our cloud is operating and performing
- Building critical tools that people use regularly, all over the company
- Collaborating with engineers on other teams to provide the visibility they need into their services
- Working with exciting technologies such as Prometheus, Mesos, Go, Docker, Kafka, Spark, Elasticsearch, and more
- Supporting, maintaining, and administering multiple 3rd party apps (Grafana, Kibana, etc.) sitting on top of Observability Platforms data
What We'll Expect From You:
- An ability to work along the full stack, with an emphasis on experience building performant web applications and front-end visualization tools
- Interest in the following areas: metrics and logging libraries and aggregators, message queuing, horizontally scalable data stores, configuration management, distributed schedulers, microservices
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language (e.g. Python)
- Familiarity with SQL and relational database architecture
- An appreciation for data-driven decision making
- Interpersonal skills and an ability to work well as part of a distributed team
- Excellent communication skills for interaction with both technical and non-technical colleagues
