Overview

The Sill seeks a Front-end Engineer who is passionate about crafting exceptional customer experiences at scale to join our newly formed Engineering team. This position requires that you put users’ experience first, building with a keen eye for layout and responsive design. You would be one of the first engineering hires in an early stage, fast-growing startup. As a core member of the engineering team, you will have a strong impact on the future of The Sill.

Location

This role will be located at The Sill’s headquarters in New York City.

Reporting

This role will report to the Senior Engineer.

Role Description

In this role, you will work on crafting, testing, and launching new features of The Sill’s UX in addition to refactoring existing components, with a focus on well-documented, efficient code that is cross-browser compatible. You have worked on cross-functional product teams before, and enjoy finding optimal solutions that balance usability, flexibility, engineering investment, and business implications. Adapting to new technologies quickly doesn't throw you, and you know how to use the right-sized approach for each problem. A true team player, you're always on the hunt for ways to raise code quality and improve future developer experience. Finally, you hold your work to high standards and don't shy away from owning ambitious projects.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Improve The Sill’s current technology stack keeping both customer and employee experience top of mind
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, specifically marketing, to design, develop and launch new web-facing features with the distinct ability to move between projects, understand business needs, and business wide implications, and be consultative throughout 
  • Work with UX design team to produce tight, forward-thinking, responsive and scalable front-end experiences on desktop, mobile devices and email 
  • Add/modify sections/snippets/templates to existing Shopify theme 
  • Document and adhere to coding standards to ensure high-quality work across all projects
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues across all layers of our tech stack

Qualifications 

  • 2-3+ years of responsive website development
  • Demonstrate a mastery of HTML & CSS/SCSS
  • Experience with Shopify, especially Shopify Slate and Liquid
  • Experience with JavaScript, especially Vanilla JS and JQuery 
  • Experience with CSS frameworks, especially Foundation or Bootstrap
  • Experience with APIs, especially Shopify’s REST and GraphQL endpoints
  • Experience with versioning, especially git/yarn/npm (Show us your GitHub!)
  • Deep understanding of cross-browser/platform, device testing, and debugging
  • Ability to work off a mockup (ex: PDF/Sketch) to convert designs into frontend code
  • Ability to communicate effectively, regardless of the audience
