Why we’re hiring
Alloy's Data engineering & infrastructure teams are scaling up! Data Eng & Infra is increasingly central to the health and functioning of our SaaS products, and as we grow and expand our team's headcount and responsibility, we want to simultaneously improve our engineering practices, planning, project management, estimation and career development. To that end, we are looking for an engineering manager with experience leading data engineering or infrastructure teams. The Data Eng & Infrastructure is responsible for:
the stability, health and change control processes for Postgres transactional databases and data warehouse infrastructure
ingestion, transformation, and automation of bulk client data for our transaction monitoring product
advising and collaborating on the design of purpose-built datastores for new product lines and microservices
horizontally scaling the datastores that support our products in a high growth environment (rapidly growing customer base and enormous YOY throughput growth)
collaborate with internal ops & business stakeholders to prioritize data warehouse and dashboard development to enable data driven decisions
You will be taking over the leadership of an established group of roughly five engineers and will also have the flexibility and budget to recruit and expand.
What you’ll be doing
The Engineering Manager's responsibility is primarily their team. They need to be able to balance their three key responsibilities: developing and mentoring each person that reports into them, planning and assisting their team to build and ship the best product by whatever means possible, and recruiting and hiring great people.
As Engineering Manager, Data Infrastructure & Engineering you’ll:
Improve the productivity, professional growth, and satisfaction of the team
Create, track, and manage our engineering team's metrics and KPIs - think Accelerate's "Four Key Metrics"
Drive code review, QA, release, and continuous deployment processes
Lead sprint rituals & ceremonies (sprint planning, retros, etc)
Review, contribute and improve engineering planning documents (eg, ERDs, roadmaps)
Hold weekly 1:1's to support the growth and development of team members
Grow and expand the team as our company continues its rapid growth
Manage agile projects in conjunction with our Director of Data and VP of Engineering to improve the platform our product is built on
Communicate technical and product decisions to the right people, resolve blocking issues, and keep our development machine humming
Build tools to scale the operation as our company grows.
Who we’re looking for
Engineering Managers at Alloy are facilitators, not dictators. You need to have the technical and managerial knowledge to help your team succeed and foster a collaborative work environment across all the other teams, both in engineering and elsewhere. We think the best way to set you up for success in this position, you should have:
5+ years of engineering experience, at least 2 of which should be in an engineering leadership position
Agile project management skills: experience leading sprint planning and execution
Experience with mentorship and helping engineers grow to achieve their career goals
Technical credibility: intermediate-to-expert capability with our core stack (Postgres, Python, Snowflake, AWS & dbt) so that you can give thorough code reviews and help engineers solve bugs
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Humble - agrees with the philosophy of servant leadership; you lead by pointing people in the right direction and being there to help support them along the way, not by micromanaging or demanding
Extra credit: experience in high-growth product companies and recruiting/hiring for teams!
