The Role

We're looking for an experienced engineering manager to lead a team, contribute independently, and work with peers from other disciplines including Product, Design, Data, and Infrastructure to build great products. You will be a technical lead and a people manager, directly managing 2-3 software engineers. With a small team to start, you will collaborate across disciplines to create a strategy to grow and retain our news audience while improving on the experience we have today. This is an impactful role that will help establish the future of our news products with a lot of potential for growth. You will report to a Director based in our New York office. We are working remote and we expect to eventually re-open our offices when it is safe to return, in 2022.

You Will

  • You'll develop, optimize, and maintain services within the BuzzFeedNews domain
  • You'll use a variety of languages and both internal and third-party platforms
  • You'll partner with Product, Design, and Data to develop the team roadmap
  • You'll work across the company with software engineers, designers, product managers, and data analysts to understand and shape work at all different stages of its lifecycle
  • You'll build stable and high performance software

You Have

  • You have 3 or more years of experience using and building web rendering services. React experience is a plus, but not required
  • You have 1 or more years of experience leading a mission focused team
  • You have managed or have interest in managing a team
  • You are an experienced engineer who enjoys contributing to and leading technical projects and working with engineers at all levels
  • You mentor and help grow the people around you
  • You love to ship and iterate, building on insights and data
  • You have experience with JavaScript, React, or other modern frontend languages
