Full-Stack Web Developer (Part-time)
About us
Geopipe is an early-stage, NYC-based startup. We are excited about problems at the intersection of GIS, Computer Vision/Machine Learning, and Distributed Systems. Our mission is to make virtual models of the real world accessible to everyone who needs them. We place a high value on curiosity, individuality, and the problem-solving power of diverse and complementary perspectives. We also believe that respecting one another and maintaining a healthy work/life balance are critical to a successful work environment.
What you’ll do
● You will work closely with our cofounders , Thomas and Christopher, to understand high-level product vision and customer requirements.
● You will implement, in HTML/CSS/JavaScript , public- and customer-facing web interfaces and workflows. These will be powered by PHP and MariaDB (MySQL) on the backend.
● You will use Git to manage your source code.
● You might use well-documented frameworks, including Cesium , to allow customers
to view and interact with large-scale geospatial datasets .
● Your contributions will help ensure the success of an early-stage startup .
● Your metrics for success will be based on meeting product milestones .
● Your path to success involves an enthusiasm for the product , a willingness to learn
new skills as needed , and an ability to debug multi-language client/server interactions .
What we’re looking for
Necessary:
● A problem-solving mindset and enthusiasm for learning new skills are more important than any particular prior knowledge or experience.
● Effective communication and collaboration with the cofounders is a must . Flexible:
● Our primary development languages are HTML , CSS , JavaScript , PHP , and MySQL , and we value modern , standards-compliant , maintainable code ; however, at this stage we have relatively little PHP infrastructure, and will consider candidates with a strong vision to select a modern web-framework that will improve maintainability over the long-haul (even if it’s not necessarily PHP).
● We use Git for managing our source code. Prior experience with Git is best, but a background with Mercurial or other DVCSs is also useful.
● Some background with linear algebra or computer graphics will be helpful in interfacing with Cesium.
● In some cases we will work with a consultant to design important functionality, but less prominent features will be designed in-house. Preference will be shown to candidates with some prior design or U I/UX experience
● Our development and production machines all run some flavor of Linux or macOS. Comfort with some flavor of Unix shell environment (e.g. bash ) will be helpful.
● We are agnostic to your choice of development environment; however, for something other than vim or Komodo Edit , we need a convincing demonstration that you will be able to self-support in the environment of your preference.
Diversity/equal opportunity statement
Geopipe is an equal opportunity employer. We place a high value on the complementary problem-solving power of a workplace in which diverse perspectives and experiences are represented. We seek to provide a work environment in which all employees feel safe, respected, and welcome.
