Who are we?

Sidewalk Labs is an Alphabet company tackling the challenges of urban growth. We are currently designing a new kind of mixed-use, complete community on Toronto's waterfront in partnership with the tripartite agency Waterfront Toronto and the local community. This joint effort, called Sidewalk Toronto, will combine forward-thinking urban design and new digital technology to create a people-centered neighborhood that achieves precedent-setting levels of sustainability, affordability, mobility, and economic opportunity.

Over the past two years, we have built a unique team of urbanists and technologists who have developed a vision for what this neighborhood of the future will be and how it will function:

  • A mobility system that is safer and more convenient than the private car at much lower cost;
  • A new standard of sustainability creating buildings that proactively manage and reduce energy by over 20%;
  • A close-knit community that uses data to improve city services;
  • Housing and real estate that is more efficient and thus far more affordable;
  • Open digital infrastructure that inspires innovation.

What is the role?

To significantly improve sustainability in cities, Sidewalk Labs is developing new technology that will drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to the status quo, enable smarter management of resources, and reduce the cost of future upgrades and maintenance. We plan for a 75%-85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to similar projects, aiming for Climate Positive.

To achieve our sustainability goals in Quayside, we plan to pilot and scale different kinds of innovation to tackle the thorniest problems in building environment performance. Achieving that high bar requires aggressive innovation around electricity and thermal systems.

We are looking for a hardware engineer to join our team in our New York City office. Your first project will be building models and programs that aid in reducing energy use in buildings and cutting greenhouse gas emissions through analysis of building management system (BMS) data and other similar systems.

It’s a bonus (but not a requirement) if you are familiar with building systems and IoT sensors, their data, and analysis of it (e.g., HVAC, occupancy, temperature, lighting, etc.).

What is required is passion for sustainability and the desire to create a climate positive community.

What you have you achieve:

Within your first 6 months, you will:

  • Developed at least one program to progress our energy-savings efforts.
  • Understand the scope of current technology and sustainability initiatives.
  • Conduct technical evaluation of products to determine the right stack and partners.
  • Install IoT devices and computing hardware in homes, offices, building mechanical areas for data capture and system management.
  • Develop methods to integrate with home and office devices to control and monitor for energy optimizations.
  • Build in security and privacy by design.
  • Get your hands dirty in the workshop or in the field.
  • Design and prototype sensors and data collection devices in-house using single board computers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc), 3D printers, and more.

What we expect:

  • Know your software engineering.
    • Have a strong engineering background which usually includes electrical, mechanical, industrial or robotics expertise, materials and production knowledge.
    • Embedded firmware development, deployment processes (NodeRed, Resin.io, etc.).
    • Know how to work with Cloud-based device management software tools (GCP IoT, for example).
    • Be familiar with circuit design and modeling software.
    • Have experience and comfort in selecting and installing devices in homes and offices (thermostats, networking equipment, etc.).
    • Because of the speed at which we're traveling, candidates need to be able to hit the ground running from day one. Therefore, 2+ years of industry experience are a must.
  • Act as a technologist.
    • Bias towards action and shipping. Once you’ve sketched out an idea, you find the fastest path to a prototype to prove the concept.
    • Strong ability to write production code quickly.
    • You are obsessed with privacy and constantly ask how we can build privacy into product design.
    • Be creative: you’ll come up with new ideas based on your broad understanding of technological possibilities and city domain knowledge.
  • Solve problems, together.
    • Come up with novel solutions, working well with technologists and non-technologists alike.
    • Ask hard questions and challenge assumptions to ensure that we’re solving the right problems.
    • Have flexibility to work on the team’s most pressing problems.
  • Care.
    • About cities, solving hard problems, and our team’s success.

We are very excited to hear from you.

The community of the future is a place for everyone, and Sidewalk Labs is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All employment is based on merit and business need.

Are you a hardware engineer interested in Sidewalk Labs, but are not sure this is the right role for you? No worries, please apply to our generalist position here. All applicants will be considered for any open position on these teams.
