BCG Digital Ventures invents, builds, scales and invests in startups with the world's most influential companies. We are looking for a Lead Backend Engineer in New York to define and implement the technical strategy for our ventures.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you’ll own all responsibility for backend application engineering encompassing data services, cloud deployment, server-side and server-less architecture and provide expertise in key aspects of engineering such as data, application and platform security, platform scalability, performance and extensibility. You will work within a venture/startup team alongside fellow engineers, data scientists, product managers, designers and growth marketers to design, build and deliver the venture from start to completion.

Working directly with the venture CTO and other lead engineers, you’ll provide thought-leadership for the team and contribute to design and architecture sessions before helping to develop those ideas into functional components and services.

You’ll take the lead for backend engineering, managing a team of developers to deliver services for the front-end, mobile and data science teams to build other applications and components on top of.

Lastly, we hope that you’ll enjoy working with fellow engineering colleges to contribute to common engineering objectives and services as well as the wider strategic roadmap.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

For the Lead Backend Engineer role, we are looking for senior hands-on technologists with a minimum of 8 years extensive backend application, data and platform engineering experience. The ideal candidate has strong technology leadership experience, is an excellent communicator and has experience working with both technical and non-technical colleagues in a cross-functional environment. Other key areas of experience include having an excellent understanding of application architecture and technical delivery with specific focus on Lean and Agile principles.

TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE

• Strong experience with one or more scripting and object-oriented languages such as Java, Ruby on Rails, Go and Python
• Firm understanding and experience working with relational and noSQL databases
• Strong experience with designing backend server and serverless architectures with an emphasis on scalability, performance and extensibility
• Experience with common programming frameworks such as Spring and Play
• Excellent understanding of secure web services including defining and developing RESTful APIs, working with different message formats i.e. JSON, XML
• Strong experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google, Azure as well as the managed services on those platforms, i.e. Aurora, Beanstalk, Lambda, BigQuery, etc.
• Strong understanding of platform, application and data security.
