Manufacturing Tooling Engineer - Welding (Contractor, Vietnam)
Position Summary
The Welding Engineer will research, design, develop and recommend welding processes in conjunction with CMs (contract manufactures), ODMs (original design manufacturers), & internally. The Welding Engineer will gather technical/customer requirements, participate in DFM (Design for Manufacturability) efforts, create/manage project timelines, and oversee NPI (New Product Introductions) and running product changes. The Welding Engineer will also provide day-to-day, hands-on, manufacturing technical support CMs/ODMs, factory floor, generate cost reduction and continuous improvement ideas and implement those ideas on the floor.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
- Be the voice of Peloton Manufacturing serving as the welding subject matter expert
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure robust DFM, providing expertise in manufacturability
- Participate in supplier sourcing, qualification, and integration of components and vendors used in Peloton’s products
- Communicates with ODMs, CMs, and vendors to prioritize and solve problems and understand/refine technical requirements for products and processes
- Develop, maintain and update all welding, and associated fixturing & gaging documentation – SOP’s/WI, parameter sheets, visual aids, calibrations & maintenance schedules, NCM tracking, etc.
- Drive Weld OEE, Yield, Cost, Quality, and Delivery KPI’s
- Troubleshoot all Welding related downtime and quality concerns and implement robust solutions
- Investigate and resolve all NPI and production and concerns – which includes 8Ds, DOE’s etc.
- Develop/Implement/Maintain Welding inspection methods
- Lead semi-annual weld audit and provide recovery plan for any discrepancies
- Lead routine report out to management of status of welding issues
- Lead/Develop welding fixture and gage concepts, design and fabrication
- Evaluate current welding techniques and processes and make recommendations for enhancements
- Remain current in state-of-the-field advancements and incorporate new techniques as appropriate
- Ensure all welding procedures and designs meet regulations and requirements
- Interpret, Weld Engineering Standards & Specifications, prints, and diagrams
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical/Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology
- Minimum of 6+ years’ experience as a Welding Engineer in a hands-on manufacturing environment is required (NPI to volume MFG stage) with focus on process capability, production volume ramp up and process quality control
- Welding certifications: AWS, IWE, TWCI, etc.
- Good knowledge of Weld processes, fixtures, and gaging to help CM in process improvement on the ground day-to-day
- SME/Knowledge of the following manual & robotic welding techniques: of, SMAW, FCAW, SAW, GTAW, FSW, MPW,
- SME/Knowledge of Welding inspection methods: Destructive and NDT Analysis, VT inspection, x-Ray, Tensile (TYE), visual, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultra-sonic, FEA/Materials test and Fracture module analysis
- WPS (WeldingProcedure Specification) /PQR (Procedure Qualification Record) Development experience
- Functional Knowledge of SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.
- Understanding of Resistance Spot Welding, Projection Nut Welding, Drawn-Arc Stud Welding, and MIG/TIG manual welding processes for repair
- Solid Experience with robot programming and mechanical maintenance
- Experience with advanced industrial automation in a high-volume production facility (Industry 4.0)
- Experience in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Knowledge of Value-Stream Mapping, Process Mapping, Kaizen, Lean, 5S, Statistical Process Control
- Managing large manufacturing capital projects ($1M+)
