SevenFifty's Mid-Level Web Engineer will join one of our squads as its 5th dedicated member, working on new features, optimization, maintenance, and production support. Our team works directly with the country’s largest beverage alcohol suppliers, importers, producers and retailers. You will likely be touching the frontend and the backend, but we are primarily interested in hiring for backend skills and experience.

This role will be expected to reliably and maintainably deliver new, complex features, participate in squad meetings, take project ownership and operate with autonomy (with occasional direction from the squad's Team Lead).

If you’re ready to put your tech and collaborative skills to work helping professionals in the beverage industry, this role is for you.

You can be located anywhere in the U.S. and will report to our Team Lead.

If you are uncertain whether you are qualified, especially if you are a woman, trans, gender-diverse, and/or of an under-represented minority, please apply! We would much prefer to have an extra application to consider, rather than that you screen yourself out.

The salary range for this position is $110k-$130k.

What you'll do

  • Implement new features and changes to existing features in our retail marketplace product.
  • Work closely with other engineers, product managers, and designers to plan the squad’s work.
  • Join our production support rotation: primarily business-hours, with occasional waking-hours monitoring during evenings and weekends.
  • Engage in problem-solving discussions with the entire engineering team on Slack.
  • Participate in interviews for future openings.

What you'll have

  • 2-5 years of experience building and shipping software.
  • Expertise in at least 1 backend technology, preferably C#/.NET Core.
  • Experience with relational (we use postgres) and NoSQL databases, query optimization, database migrations, etc.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, AWS, containers and/or Elasticsearch are all plusses.
  • Some familiarity with (and/or openness to learn) frontend tech would be preferred (we use React and TypeScript).
  • An interest in part-time pair- and mob-programming.
  • A penchant for self-driven learning and research as you work.
  • Clear written communication, and the ability to quickly identify and share important discoveries and problems in your work with others on the team.
  • Opinions about backend approaches and architecture, and a readiness to share them without being dogmatic.
  • The ability to be accountable for your own time in a fully remote environment.
  • The desire to contribute to a growing, dynamic team and help shape process, practice and operations. We work in two-week sprints and do our best to follow common Agile practices (daily async standups, sprint groomings and retros).  We're always looking to improve on how we function as a squad.
  • You will need to provide your own workspace with reliable Internet service. We will provide a MacBook Pro and monitor.
  • Respect for the industry we serve.

What you do NOT need

  • Encyclopedic knowledge of C# or any other technology.
  • A college degree, or high GPA or SAT score.
  • An address in or around New York City.
  • To drink alcohol! Many of our colleagues do not.

The interview process (the parts are typically scheduled separately)

  1. Phone screen and brief exercise with an Engineering Manager (45 minutes)
  2. Take-home engineering project (2 hours, timed)
  3. Two Q&A sessions with groups you will be working with (2 hours total, scheduled independently of each other)
  4. Background and 3 reference checks

More about us

  • The apps you'd be working on are primarily React/Next.js on a .NET Core API.  Other engineering squads work on Rails: a combination of classic server-rendered views and React.
  • Other parts of our primary stack: PostgreSQL (Amazon RDS), Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, Heroku, and Docker.  The squad also supports a legacy Python/Django API app that we're slowly porting/consolidating into our .NET Core API as time/needs allow.
  • Our squad is fairly new (formed mid-2020) and is composed of tenured SevenFifty members, new hires, and folks coming in from acquisitions.  We're all growing and learning together and value our diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Our broader Engineering team’s shared work hours are 11am-4pm Eastern Time. Individuals establish the rest of their schedule according to the needs of their squad balanced with their availability.
  • Our #parents Slack channel currently has 20 members who have ample leeway to balance their work time against taking care of their families.
  • We have a wide range of opt-in social events, lunch-n-learns, community and special interest groups to ensure everyone has opportunities to connect and develop in a remote environment.
