Are you keen to work somewhere that’s stimulating and friendly with countless opportunities for growth and plenty of freedom to make a real impact? This could be the place for you!

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer here at INSHUR. We are based in and around the NYC area but currently work remotely. Once safe, we will be transitioning to a hybrid model (a mix of office and home-based work with travel to a co-working space for in-person collaboration when needed - e.g. sprint planning, architecture meetings, team workshops etc).

You’ll be working on re-inventing insurance in exciting markets across multiple territories, including the US, UK, and the Netherlands, and new European countries and US states as we expand.

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you'll be technically coordinating, guiding, and overseeing a number of back-end teams. You’ll be responsible for helping those teams develop high quality and scalable solutions.

We’ve got a great team in place and are a people & culture-first business (check out our Glassdoor reviews). We value high performance and have always cared about making INSHUR feel like a place where everyone is building something really special, that we can all be proud of, and doing it with friends.

What you'll do

As our Principal Software Engineer, you will be responsible for guiding and advising existing teams around architecture, solutions, technologies, and techniques. You’ll be expected to keep up to date with modern technologies, ideas, and solutions. You’ll need to be pragmatic in finding the right solution for the problem and discussing it with the teams. You will be expected to listen to others ideas’ and help promote discussion and excellence amongst the teams.

We don’t have a checklist of skills - our recruitment is much more around aptitude and passion so don’t worry if you’ve not used a particular tool or checked off all the skills and experience listed below. However, we think the below would make you successful in this role.

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Strong architectural and systems design background
  • An ability to adapt and think outside the box
  • Have plenty of experience developing and technically leading Java based teams
  • Are knowledgeable about modern Java frameworks such as Spring Boot
  • Have experience designing and running API based software in containers
  • Understand that good communication and collaboration is needed to succeed
  • Are passionate about new technologies
  • Understand the value of working in scrum teams
  • Have ideally worked in a modern orchestration platform such as Kubernetes

Your colleagues say you:

  • Enjoy tech leadership and helping others solve complex technical challenges
  • Are diligent but pragmatic
  • Are always supportive and helpful
  • Are a self starter who can drive enthusiasm within the team
  • Are happy to help with monitoring and recruiting whilst not moving away from the day to day

What we offer

We provide a friendly and stimulating environment for everyone to grow, enjoy and thrive. Our working environment is a hybrid of remote and office based operations, depending on personal circumstances and individual and business needs. We aim to provide an agile and flexible base from which to grow and we are iterating as we go along. We’ve adapted our ways of working, including ‘remote-first’ principles, not merely applying office-based approaches to things like hours, our culture, and how we communicate.

We offer all our employees stock options and we've built a benefits package that invests in our employees’ long-term personal and professional growth and well-being. Here’s a sample of what this includes:

  • 30 days of holiday annually in addition to 8 federal holidays and statutory sick leave
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Basic Life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance
  • 401K match
  • 13 weeks full pay parental leave regardless of your gender
  • Flexible working hours
  • Annual training allowance of $1300 (no questions asked) and regular learning opportunities
  • Commuter benefits
  • Monthly flexible well-being allowance to help you remain healthy and productive
  • And much more…

It goes without saying that we provide everyone with a laptop, monitor, top of the range kit, and any software you need.

Where possible, we will cross-train and/or focus on what interests you, whether it’s improving your technical skills with books, courses, and training or increasing your management abilities.
