Job Description
As a Principal Software Engineer on the Commerce Team, you'll focus on the various commerce aspects of the Today (today.com) and Select Brands (nbcnews.com/select; cnbc.com/select). Our stakeholders include the consumers of each of these brands, as well as, the editorial and business teams that we support. As a member of the Commerce team, you will work to improve and create new tools and experiences for each group. Your voice will be key in helping us craft a technical vision that aligns with the goals of the organization, increases the effectiveness and reach of the Commerce team and ultimately maximizes revenue. As a technical leader in our engineering community, your experience will be crucial in helping coach and mentor junior devs and have a direct impact on the architectural vision and strategy of our division.

Responsibilities
The day-to-day of a principal engineer at NBC News Digital will include the following:
- Build, test, review, and ship software for our platforms, including our suite of APIs and microservices, editorial tools, and web frontends
- Drive collaboration on the design of system architecture, data models, data flows, schemas and API contracts
- Liaise with and support our editorial teams to understand their workflow and implement improvements
- Be an advocate for the team, helping to establish processes that contribute to our overall success
- Define the technical roadmap which will help the team to achieve its business objectives.
- Influence and refine the technical strategy and architectural principles for our organization.
- Support the technical development of junior devs and help onboard new devs
- Deliver talks/demos to various audiences across our product and engineering org
- Contribute to and participate in teaching/learning opportunities for devs
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in front end development
- A focus on writing clean, testable code that centers both developer and user experience; delivering code that sets the standard for quality and maintainability for our teams is paramount
- A problem solving attitude using analytics and user research to make fact based decisions
- Great communication skills, paying special attention to how your message is delivered to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
- Experience in an Agile environment
Preferred Qualifications
- A mobile-first mindset, paying special attention to accessibility, page optimization and/or SEO
- Excels in an environment with cross-functional teams, working fluidly with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Software Developers, Editors, and other highly skilled specialists
- Experience working in media/publishing/e-commerce
Our Tech Stack
- Our front end framework of choice is React
- Our data stores include MongoDB, PostgresSQL, and more. We use GraphQL and ElasticSearch for queries and Redis for caching.
- We use Node.js and Go in our backends.
- We mostly host our services in AWS with some on-prem.
- Our technical ecosystem includes (but isn't limited to) Jenkins, DataDog, Splunk, Github, Netlify, Cypress, StoryBook, Kubernetes and LaunchDarkly

Salary range: $170,000 - $220,000 (bonus eligible).
