About this Position:

As the Foursquare Android team lead, you would join a small team of talented Android engineers. The team works on two consumer apps (Foursquare City Guide and Foursquare Swarm), and the Pilgrim SDK, our mobile location platform that enables developers to use our proprietary “snap to place” and stop detection to power timely location-based push notifications and create a timeline of the places their user visit. You would help drive technical and architectural discussions on the Android team, while heading up development on the Pilgrim SDK for Android, which is at the core of Foursquare's location intelligence.

Our team uses the latest and greatest technologies. We use many of the libraries that you're probably used to, like RxJava, Glide, OkHttp, etc. We've been using Kotlin in production in the apps for over a year, with all new code in 2017 and beyond being in Kotlin. We've adopted Google's Architecture Components library for our newest major features in Foursquare 11 and Swarm 5, and are pushing forward with them for all of our future work.

You will collaborate frequently with your fellow Android developers, of course. However, you will also work closely with members of other teams. On the consumer side, you will work directly with designers to plan new features, correct course, and manage expectations while working through your tasks. On the Pilgrim side, you will work closely with the venues and data-science teams, whose work helps power the SDK.

We have a lot of ideas left to implement and features to refine in our 3 products. As a result, you will have ownership over much of what you work on, powering apps used every day by millions of people around the world.

This role is open for hire in either our New York City HQ or San Francisco office.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• 3+ years of proven industry experience working on Android projects
• Deep experience working on a team of Android engineers building and maintaining large-scale apps, or impressive apps that you’ve built personally
• Experience as a technical expert on the Android platform and competency with industry standard libraries
• Experience with Android-specific location libraries is a plus
• Experience building SDKs or open source libraries is desired
• Kotlin experience is a plus
• Effective communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Comfort and delight in a small, fast-paced startup environment
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field
