FOAM is hiring! We’re building a geospatial protocol for Ethereum and we are aiming to bridge the gap between blockchain and physical space by creating an open-source standard run by a non-profit foundation. The standard is backed by a cryptographical token whose aim is to coordinate mesh-networks of time-synchronized radio beacons. The broadcasted cryptographic time-stamps are the foundation for a decentralized proof-of-location protocol. The devices are stationary, but we expect to see mobile receivers and/or phone integrations further down the line.

Duties

Design, perform feasibility analysis and ultimately coordinate the prototyping and eventual production of cryptographic-enabled radio devices engaging in a time-synchronization protocol.

You will report directly to the CEO and CTO, working with a small set of talented developers.

Work description

- Architecture/feasibility analysis of a wireless radio beaconing system to run the FOAM geospatial protocol
- Design, validation and deployment of functional prototypes (a deployment of 100+ beacons) (wireless range/FCC device class TBD)
- Prototype PCB fabrication/assembly and ownership of all aspects of EE CAD (designing/managing component libraries, schematic capture, PCB layout, component procurement, design-for-manufacturing, etc.)
- Selecting and managing component suppliers and manufacturing partners and/or design-to-production shops
- Scaling the system to mass production
- Building and leading a team of engineers for prototype realization and managing a hardware team

Skills and Competencies

We’re looking for an electrical engineer with strong EE fundamentals who possesses demonstrated experience with:

  • RF circuit design and PCB layout
  • Antenna design
  • Power supply topologies and battery systems
  • Embedded systems, ARM, processor selection, common communication protocols (especially USB, SPI, I2C and UART), various RF technologies
  • Prototype bring-up and debugging, functional verification and electronics manufacturing
  • Analysis tools (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, RF protocol analyzers)
  • High-volume manufacturing, factory test, failure analysis tools, creative problem solving
  • Designing and iterating prototypes in the realm of mobile radio beacons (range in the thousands)
  • Understanding the specific constraints involved in cryptographic radio communication - bandwidth, power consumption etc.
  • Working with vendors and/or design-to-production shops
  • Familiarity with collaboration tools like git
  • A desire/ability to work independently and build something new from scratch

Work environment

  • Active participation on GitHub: planning, writing issues and documentation
  • In-person participation at the least two times per week
  • Active participation in planning and calendar management
  • Use and understanding of our DevOps setup (there will be an orientation session)

Interest or experience with blockchain applications is a plus, but definitely not a requirement.

We’re building full-stack Ethereum applications using functional programming tools including Purescript and Haskell all the way down, but experience with these tools are not necessary.

As we’re growing our team, we anticipate that the engineer’s role will grow into a key part of our company. Therefore, we emphasize the need for a driven person that might grow into a managing role.

Salary

Contract labor, with initial scope of 3-6 months of full-time work, salary negotiable. Contingent on project success there will be a position available for full- or part-time employment. Equity in FOAM is available.

Location

NYC and/or remote.
