Job Description:
Quartz Business Platform Senior Developer
Job Description:
Quartz is revolutionizing the way Global Markets does business at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Quartz is the primary cross-business platform for pricing trades, managing positions, and computing risk exposure. Thousands of developers are using the highly agile platform to deliver applications to thousands of end users. The QzPrice team develops and improves the components that provide cross-asset class base and shocked market data for computing counterparty risk and capital across millions of derivative trades.
You will be a hands-on Python developer within the highly technical Quartz Core team - the firm's thought leaders for the evolution of the Quartz platform:
  • Python based environment for agile development
  • Globally distributed object-oriented petabyte-class databases
  • A core framework of reusable business objects
  • Automated tools for testing, integration and global application deployment
  • Linux compute clusters
  • Culture of learning and continuous improvement
  • A multi-million line code base

Work focus:
  • In addition to acting as an individual developer, help to guide the work of less experienced developers. Help to remove their roadblocks, provide coaching and generally accelerate the productivity of the wider team
  • Ability to navigate the wider organization to gain agreement and buy-in for solutions
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of Quartz, QzPrice and neighboring components
  • Ability to understand and enhance existing code, and formulate a strong mental model of the architecture and how the key subsystems work holistically end-to-end
  • Implement new features that fit harmoniously with the existing architecture
  • Improve code base, testing and create tools that improve the team's productivity and visibility into QzPrice and neighboring components
  • Ensure that features are rolled out safely, covered by automated tests, and are well documented
  • Identify and execute on opportunities for improving data quality, coverage and timeliness
  • Diagnose the root causes of issues and resolve them in a time-efficient and permanent manner

Required Skills:
  • Experience as a lead developer or hands-on team lead
  • 10+ years of substantial programming experience, including Python
  • BS degree in Computer Science (or related), with exceptional knowledge of data structures
  • Experience of the development of large scale distributed systems within a team
  • Exposure to testing procedures and peer code reviews relevant to the build-out of large systems
  • Ability to take a fairly open-ended large problem and solve it in manageable pieces, divide these pieces will clear ownership among other team members, and ensure as an end result that the pieces all fit together cohesively
  • Initiative to independently analyze and develop solutions to problems
  • Understanding of Agile methodology
  • Strong communication skills
  • Collaborative team player
  • Knowledge of Financial Markets, ideally with exposure to one of more of the following: market data, derivative pricing, financial products, and risk management systems. Experience building similar sell-side derivative risk management systems to Quartz would be beneficial (e.g., SecDb at Goldman Sachs, Athena at JPM, Quartz at BofA).

Desired Skills:
  • Use of No-SQL databases, and distributed compute grids
  • Master's degree is a plus
  • We are interested in smart and proactive people who can deliver business solutions. If examples of your work are publicly viewable over the internet (GitHub, etc.), feel free to point us at work that is representative of your coding proficiency. This is of course optional, as we recognize that many great developers work primarily on closed source projects.
