Senior Software Engineer, Community

| Greater NYC Area
As a key member Skillshare’s Community team, you’ll be at the helm of one our most innovative and exploratory groups at Skillshare. The team’s work draws from a deep understanding of our users’ needs and augments their experience beyond classes - how else can we provide value to our students and teachers? How can we foster and grow the learning community on the platform? The Community team builds emerging features and functionalities to answer these questions.
The team’s work is pivotal to the growth of our platform and our network. As such, we’re looking for a high level engineer who will work closely with our engineers, product, and leadership stakeholders to bring these features and functionalities to life.

What you'll do:

  • Participate in daily stand-ups, bi-weekly sprint plannings, and sprint retrospectives for the team (we work in agile here)
  • Help facilitate ticket assignment – you know the strengths of engineers on your team, and when to give them new challenges to help them grow
  • Collaborate with the team’s Product Manager to determine longer-term roadmaps
  • Build the product! A solid portion of this role will be hands-on writing code, and we’ll look to your senior expertise to set the standard for the team.
  • Review code and provide technical mentorship to engineers on your team (and across the company)

Why we're excited about you:

  • You’re an experienced full-stack engineer with a proven history of leading teams in this capacity.
  • You are motivated by technical mentorship.
  • You bring best practices for coding, testing and technical documentation to the table, and are ready to help us implement them.
  • You’re interested in emerging technologies and excited to help push the boundaries of Skillshare’s platform offerings.

Why you're excited about us:

  • Impact: Innovation is at the heart of our Community team, and you’ll be leading the technical charge.
  • Growth: You’ll have the opportunity to wear a lot of hats and take on more responsibility over time.
  • Our team: We have a passionate, talented team that is a lot of fun to work with.
  • Our mission: We’re doing work that matters – connecting lifelong learners around the world and empowering them to pursue their creativity.
  • Flexibility: We believe that doing your best work means living a full life. That means different things for everyone, so we optimize for trust, invest to support remote teams, have an unlimited vacation policy (with a required minimum!), and encourage work-life balance.

An Insider's view of Skillshare

What’s the vibe like in the office?

We balance being both focused and flexible in our office. In this kind of fluid environment, we can seamlessly ease in and out of individual heads-down time to group sessions; from meditation to collaboration; from desk to the lounge. The vibe lends us the freedom to play to our strengths and value our differences in working styles.

Jenni

Senior Product Designer

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

Cross-team collaboration is frequent and organic at Skillshare; we foster a uniquely friendly atmosphere of openness and shared purpose. Through cross-team threads, project-based meetings, comments on RFC's, pull request reviews, Q&A sessions, and, of course, simple conversations, collaboration commonly happens across a table or across time zones.

Justin

Engineering Manager

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

Skillshare has supported my career growth and trajectory tremendously. I started here 3 years ago on the Community team, but after discovering a passion for coding, Skillshare provided me with a mentor and on the job time to learn. It's been two years since I switched careers, and I'm so grateful that I get to come in and keep learning every day.

Callan

Software Engineer

How do you make yourself accessible to the rest of the team?

As a management team, we strongly believe in making ourselves accessible. This includes: 1:1s with direct reports, skip-level meetings, team-wide meetings, coffees with people across departments, and attending team events. More broadly, we apply the same foundational rule we all learned in kindergarten: treat people the way you want to be treated.

Sabrina

VP, Operations

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

We're in an exciting position - we have a product that we believe in and a community that believes in us. The question we face is: how can we build a platform which works for the Skillshare of today, but will scale to the needs of the Skillshare of the future? It’s not enough to keep up with growth; we must build for where our growth will take us.

Samantha

Director of Engineering
