About The Role

The person in this role will be responsible for planning out our ideal architectural future and ensuring that everyone working on the our learning platform has a clear picture of what that future looks like. They will work as an equal partner with our Sr. Director of Engineering, Learning Systems to ensure that while our path to that future may wind through many twists and turns, we hue as closely as possible to our long terms goals as we provide solutions to our users along that path. This person will consult with engineering leads on our architectural direction, and provide them with tools to hold their engineers accountable for tactical decision-making that moves us in that direction with as little wasted effort as possible. Finally this person will provide the direction that will inform new employees, contractors, and third party service providers about how best to contribute to our platform and improve student and faculty outcomes.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Research new software patterns, concepts, and tools to make informed decisions about our future architecture.
  • Design, document, and inform others on our architectural plans.
  • Consult with software engineering leadership on their areas of product ownership.
  • Account for and resolve conflicts with our architectural planning in a forward looking fashion.
  • Consult with product management to ensure an efficient overall roadmap that hues to architectural excellent while delivering maximum value to students and faculty.

You have experience in:

  • 10 years in the field of software engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following languages: Ruby, Python, Javascript.
  • Experience architecting solutions in a cloud-native context (AWS, CloudFront, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience building service-oriented applications and architecting in an SoA context.
  • Experience with event-driven applications using queues, service bus, and other related patterns.
  • Expert skills in technical documentation, communication.
  • Ability to independently collaborate with multiple cross-functional teams.
  • (Preferred) Experience with the education technology business domain and education-specific technical standards (LTI)
  • (Preferred) Experience with common web frameworks and associated technologies (Rails, Node, Angular/React, JWT, SQL, GraphQL)
