Software Engineer, Backend (Developer Experience) - Distributed US, Toronto, London
Databases are the beating heart of every business in the world.
Cockroach Labs is the creator of CockroachDB, the most highly evolved cloud-native, distributed SQL database on the planet that scales fast, survives anything, and thrives anywhere. We created CockroachDB to unshackle teams from the constraints of their database. Join us on our mission to enable every developer to build world-changing applications!
About the Role
We’re looking for engineers who are passionate about creating beautiful, idiomatic, and ergonomic developer interfaces to build an amazing developer experience for CockroachCloud.
The Developer Experience team will be responsible for the end-to-end experience of developers using CockroachDB and Cockroach Cloud. This experience consists in part of tools and libraries that developers use to connect to, operate, and use the CockroachDB products. They own the flow and first-time experience of a developer who has created a CockroachCloud cluster to support their application development goals. The team is being formed in response to a strategic priority to dramatically increase developer adoption of CockroachCloud.
As a member of the team, you’ll be expected to work on our internally-built SDK and CLI, as well as contribute to open-source adapters and plugins for language ORMs and drivers like ActiveRecord, Hibernate, and Django.
You Will
- Develop, maintain, and ship an idiomatic set of language SDKs for the CockroachCloud API
- Develop and maintain the Cockroach Cloud CLI, the flagship TUI (terminal user interface) for CockroachCloud.
- Work with the community of CockroachDB users to understand their use cases and help create a frictionless integration with CockroachCloud, their applications, and their development workflows.
- Work with strategic partners in the modern application development ecosystem to advance developer experience for CockroachCloud.
The Expectations
In your first 30 days, you will become an integrated member of our engineering team. We believe that it's essential for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology and our company.
After 3 months, you'll be integrated into the team. You will be comfortable contributing to the SDK, CLI, and CockroachCloud codebase. You will begin to determine the parts of our product that most interest you and work with your manager to focus your efforts on projects that align with those areas and the product roadmap.
As our team grows, you will have the opportunity to shape the direction of development for CockroachDB’s developer experience. We want our users to have a phenomenal experience using our product, and you play a crucial role in making CockroachDB a joy to use.
You Have
- Experience building beautiful, idiomatic, and easy-to-use developer experiences, such as SDKs, CLIs, or APIs
- Interest in creating tools that maximally relieve developer pain in connecting to, operating, and using CockroachDB.
- Experience as an application developer and database user. You might have developed Jamstack applications, serverless applications, or conventional web apps.
- Comfort using programming languages like Go, Java, Python, Javascript or Typescript. Polyglot programmers are preferred, since you will be working with several programming languages as you work to build out a suite of SDKs.
- Experience building collaborative relationships with your colleagues. You enjoy being part of the code review process and partnering with your teammates on challenging problems.
- A BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
The Team
You will report to Jordan Lewis, Director of Engineering, SQL + Developer Experience.
Jordan joined Cockroach Labs to work on the best new database on the block with the people who know how to make it great. Before joining Cockroach Labs, he was improving education at Knewton, where he worked on providing real-time content recommendations for students at scale. Outside of work he enjoys rock climbing at the gym and outdoors, singing and playing board games.
The Developer Experience team will be a brand new team at Cockroach Labs. You will have the opportunity to shape it from the ground up.
