Figma is growing our team of passionate people on a mission to make design accessible to all. Born on the Web, Figma helps entire product teams brainstorm, create, test, and ship better designs, together. From great products to long-lasting companies, we believe that nothing great is made alone—come make with us!

The vision of the Figma Community is to move Figma from standalone design tools to an ecosystem and platform. Community is where our users share, explore, and gain inspiration from one another. We provide the support for creators to thrive with the power of the design community and take their design process to the next level. We’re looking for a senior engineer who will take ownership of this team’s projects and initiatives as a technical leader. This is a high-impact role that involves deep technical ability as well as strong project management and communication skills.

You’ll work primarily on the Community product, a full-stack web codebase, but also get to interact with a wide breadth of product areas like the Figma and FigJam editor as well as the Figma file browser. As an independent product surface with a unique focus, our team operates like a mini startup inside Figma. We are taking a product from zero to one, and along the way, defining our own data models and patterns while building off of Figma’s infrastructure.

Engineers on Community wear a variety of hats and collaborate closely with product, design, data, and research partners to drive forward a newer product while also solving a wide variety of interesting technical challenges. Our team's engineering values include craftsmanship with a balance for pragmatism and prioritizing impact.

As we build a public space for creation, we strive to bring the ethos of Community to all aspects of our work and culture. We value inclusivity, collaboration, balance, and taking care of ourselves and each other. Project groups often contain a mix of people at all levels of technical experience - we know everyone has something to bring to the table regardless of seniority. Figma’s engineering organization offers a formal mentorship program for all engineers, where individuals can work on career enrichment opportunities and goals with a matched mentor from within the team.

This is a full time role that can be held from one of our US hubs or remotely in the United States.

What you'll do at Figma:

  • In 30 days, you will…
  • Onboard onto Figma’s tech stack and start building small features and fixing bugs to learn how our code works, and gain exposure to the patterns and best practices for our technical stack.
  • Start working on your first project with others.
  • Get to know your teammates, cross-functional partners, and fellow Figmates via regular fun virtual check-ins and hangouts, weekly engineering team meetings, and bi-weekly broader team meetings.
  • Face off in a game of DrawBattle against the rest of us.
  • In 60 days, you will…
  • Have familiarity with the codebase and product surfaces. You’ll ideally ship your first project within a month or two!
  • Learn all about engineering tooling, metrics, logging, and error reporting frameworks.
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager and your teammates to onboard onto project planning, prioritization, and quality rotations.
  • You might start getting better at DrawBattle.
  • In 90 days and beyond, you will…
  • Be able to comfortably navigate the technical stack and understand how the product works.
  • Start taking ownership over project planning and prioritization, new and ongoing initiatives, and engineering team processes.
  • Participate in product discussions and design critiques to help shape and drive product direction

Some projects you could work on:

  • Contextual comments for Community files and plugins
  • Server-side search for files, plugins, and profiles
  • Building a trending files algorithm for the landing page feed
  • Audio chat in Figma design and FigJam

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Have at least 3+ years of professional experience shipping features or products as a full-stack developer
  • Have familiarity with modern full-stack web technologies and standard methodologies. We work in Typescript, React, and Redux on the frontend and Ruby/Sinatra on the backend. If you don’t have explicit experience with these languages, that's okay - we will ramp you in our codebase during onboarding.
  • Have experience leading projects with multiple engineers.
  • Have strong cross-functional collaboration, communication, leadership, and project management skills
  • Have an interest or experience in a technical leadership role on a mid-large size product engineering team

  • At Figma, one of our values is Grow as you go. We believe in hiring smart, curious people who are excited to learn and develop their skills. If you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with the points outlined in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles

About Figma

Dylan Field and Evan Wallace co-founded Figma in 2012 with the vision of building tools for designers in the browser. Their goal was to create the first design tool that combined the accessibility of the Web with the functionality of a native app. Today Figma is a platform with tools and spaces to support the entire product development process—idea to design to build—and has simplified collaboration for companies like Microsoft, Uber, and The New York Times to name a few.

At Figma, we celebrate and support our differences. We know employing a team rich in diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions allows our employees, products, and community to flourish. Figma is an equal opportunity workplace—we are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national orientation, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status.

By applying for this job, the candidate acknowledges and agrees that any personal data contained in their application or supporting materials will be processed in accordance with the applicable candidate section of Figma's Privacy Policy.
