About Common

Common designs, creates, and operates all-inclusive homes, bringing community, convenience, and flexibility to housing. Common members know their neighbors, have more free time, and the opportunity to transfer to any Common home across the country. Since launching in October 2015, Common has opened more than a dozen homes across New York, San Francisco, Oakland, Washington D.C., and Chicago.

Common was founded by General Assembly co-founder Brad Hargreaves and has raised over $65MM in venture funding.

Common is seeking a Software Engineer to help us build systems, tools and apps for our growing community of members across the United States. This person will work with the Digital Product team and teams across Common to build to build high utility, unobtrusive, and beautiful applications that enable experiences at Common our members could never have anywhere else.

About the role

The member portal is a new project at Common. We're building a platform which will serve as the digital touchpoint between each member, our services, and their community. 

As one of the first engineers working on this project, you'll be helping make big decisions on what we build and how we build it. This means:

- Talking to members and our member services team to determine the highest value features we can build

- Designing and architecting the still greenfield codebase 

- Writing lots of code

• ..Have opinions about what a good React codebase looks like
• …have developed a Ruby on Rails application.
• …are a stickler for code quality, style and process, including insisting upon well factored, well tested and thoroughly QAed code.
• …communicate openly, honestly and kindly, knowing when and how to give appropriate feedback to people, both on their code and personal interactions.
• …are comfortable designing and implementing both in a team setting (e.g. pair programming) and on your own.
• …are a life long learner and eagerly interested in the craft of both personal development and software development — “it’s a journey, not a destination”
