About Us

Farmshelf is an early-stage high-growth startup that builds smart indoor farms that make growing food easy.  Our bookshelf-sized Farmshelfs provide leafy greens and herbs year-round to food halls, corporate cafeterias and restaurants, including those of acclaimed chefs José Andrés, Marcus Samuelsson, and Claus Meyer. Together, our team of engineers, designers, technicians and plant scientists take on the challenges of creating agricultural technology innovations to feed our growing urban populations. 

The Role

We are looking for a talented, energetic, and committed individual to join our diverse team as a Software Engineer. An ability to get things done in a fast-paced environment is important to this role.  We’re looking for people who innovate and love solving hard problems! This person will be charged with directing and executing the full-stack development of our web application, an important tool currently being used internally by our Plant R&D and Field Operations teams, with a goal to roll out to external clients this year. 

Responsibilities

  • Drive development of our Farmcloud webapp and associated back-end services
  • Build robust test systems and use continuous integration to ensure quality products
  • Participate in code reviews both as a reviewer and reviewee
  • Work closely with the CTO, product and field operations teams to roadmap future product features and technical improvements
  • Manage deployment and monitoring of webapp and associated services

Core Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
  • 4+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong background in building web-based systems
  • Strong experience with a SQL RDBMS (particularly PostgreSQL)
  • Prior use of AWS products (EC2, S3, RDS, etc) or a similar cloud service like DigitalOcean
  • Strong experience building and testing back-end systems with Ruby (preferably with Sinatra)
  • Experience building testable, production front-end Javascript applications with ReactJS
  • Experience with Redux a big plus
  • Use of continuous integration tools such as Jenkins and Circle CI 
  • Strong team player
  • Problem solver with proven ability to execute
  • Strong ability to drive any required corrective actions
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excited to work with a fast-growing mission-driven startup

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Python (>= Python 3) a big plus
  • Experience working with embedded systems a plus
  • Experience working with a pub/sub system (MQTT, RabitMQ, others) a plus
  • Experience with or interest in IoT and/or embedded systems and programming languages such as embedded C, embedded Linux and Python
  • Experience as a product or project lead managing interns and/or engineers
  • Experience working in a cross-functional environment
  • Experience with AgTech, FoodTech or connected kitchen appliances
