SevenFifty's Web Development Team Lead will work on the SaaS platform that helps our customers across the wholesale alcohol industry embrace innovation. Our newest colleague will join a tight-knit group of folks who crave ownership and change rather than rigid structure and micromanagement. The Team Lead will report to our Web & Mobile Engineering Manager.

You can be located throughout the United States (working remotely); we are completely distributed and have no office.

If you are uncertain whether you are qualified, especially if you are a woman, not cisgender, a person of color, Latinx, and/or of any other under-represented group, please apply! We would much prefer to have an extra application to consider, rather than that you screen yourself out.

The salary range for this position is $160k-175k.

We're looking for an experienced full-stack developer to join our 20-person engineering team and organize feature development work for a small squad. The squad is currently three other engineers and a product manager working with stakeholders across the business, and a cross-team designer as needed. The squad's core mission is to build and support the web side of our flagship wholesaler platform: a suite of Rails/React applications, data pipeline, and related tooling.

This role entails a mix of hands-on development and management of the squad’s work. In addition to directly contributing through software development and code review, you'll act as glue for the team's work, facilitating strong communication and ensuring each squad member's day-to-day activities are best contributing to the team’s goals. The role is not focused on leadership in software-design matters such as architecture.

This can be a transitional role into people management but does not involve direct reports. Later on, you might seek to become an engineering manager, or alternatively to double down on hands-on work as an architect or staff engineer.

What you'll do

  • Contribute directly to feature development
  • Mentor and coach squadmates in planning projects on the scale of 1-6 months, keeping work flowing, and resolving process bottlenecks
  • Develop a continuous awareness of what your squadmates are working on, when they are likely to be stuck, and how to intervene
  • Support your squad's product manager in stakeholder reviews and roadmap planning, to ensure the squad is effectively creating business value
  • Join our production support rotation: primarily business-hours, with occasional waking-hours monitoring during evenings and weekends
  • Engage in problem-solving discussions with the entire engineering team on Slack
  • Participate in interviews for future openings

What you'll have

  • 5+ years working on multiple teams developing web apps, and running them in production for at least thousands of users
  • Experience with server-side as well as browser-side frameworks, e.g. Rails and React - you can be focused in one more than the other
  • The desire to work closely with product managers and other engineers (e.g. we use pair- and mob-programming frequently)
  • Experience resolving ambiguity by applying an understanding of business needs
  • Familiarity with a range of project management process, tools, and frameworks, and opinions on how and when to use them (with a non-dogmatic approach)
  • Clear and concise written communication ability
  • You will need to provide your own workspace with reliable Internet service. We will provide a MacBook Pro and monitor.
  • Respect for the industry we serve.

What you do NOT need

  • Experience with our specific tech stack
  • A college degree
  • Proximity to New York
  • To drink – many of us don’t

The interview process (the parts are typically scheduled separately)

  • Phone screen and brief exercise with an Engineering Manager (30 minutes)
  • Take-home engineering project (2 hours, timed)
  • Three Q&A sessions with groups you will be working with (3 hours total, scheduled independently of each other)
  • Background and 3 reference checks

More about us

  • We went fully geo-distributed in 2019, and communicate primarily using Slack, Zoom, and GitHub. Prior to COVID we convened about twice a year in person, and look forward to being able to reinstate this Team Week tradition.
  • Other parts of our primary stack: PostgreSQL (Amazon RDS), Solr, RabbitMQ, Heroku, and Docker
  • The squad's shared work hours are 11am-4pm Eastern Time. Individuals establish the rest of their schedule according to the needs of their squad balanced with their availability.
  • Our #parents Slack channel currently has 20 members who have ample leeway to balance their work time against taking care of their families.
  • We have a wide range of opt-in social events, lunch-n-learns, community and special interest groups to ensure everyone has opportunities to connect and develop in a remote environment.
