At White Ops, we’re all hackers. This doesn’t mean you have to hold a key to the internet (although one of our founders does!), but it does require approaching problems in unconventional ways. We are attacking criminal botnets through the ad fraud that finances their operations. Our proprietary technology detects and prevents sophisticated online fraud. By reducing the incentives for crime, we are making the internet a better place. Our mighty team of humans have several things in common:
We are hackers.
We create tau for ourselves and each other.
We think big and move fast.
We practice humility.
We “pwn it”.

Our mission at White Ops is to verify the humanity of every online transaction. Our core technology is human verification, the ability to distinguish human vs non human activity in a variety of environments and applications.
As the engineering manager of the detection program you will manage a team of hackers and data scientists who develop detection techniques for non human activity, to include remote detection of malware and similar forms of organized cybercrime. There is an active adversary, continuously attempting to defeat our algorithms, and to sometimes interfere directly with our capabilities and tech stack.
Running this team will involve four primary aspects:

  • Threat modeling: how would you game the system - taking a systematic approach to understanding the incentives of a system, as well as its payment triggers and potential bad actors, and presenting the characteristics and behaviors of those models.
  • Raw signal development: this is where the detection team thrives and requires some level of creative problem solving. The better the technical signal we can extract from different environments, the stronger our detection and prevention abilities are.
  • Marker development: markers are our core algorithms that take in raw signal and output a decision. We are continuously developing markers for various types of fraud, specific bots, malware packages, and other things. This is the heart of the system.
  • Threat Intel: this area of research involves taking all the data we have and exploring attribution to software, malware, and sometimes actors. It will also involve applying data science techniques to detect potential false negatives, false positives, and signs of adversary adaptation, as well as reverse engineering applicable malware and bot samples for new detection leads.

Our detection markers use the entire network stack, from live packet analysis up through app-layer interrogation via JavaScript and mobile application SDK integrations. The development team works across environments, including JavaScript, native android and iOS, and network analysis.
The detection program manager leads this team with a results oriented approach that brings out the best in the talents of the team, and is responsible for the process definition of the program, as well as its execution. A good detection program provides comprehensive detection for specific threats, and supports a robust process for identifying new threat models, developing new and potent signal, and generating accurate markers that can scale in production. This also includes leading the team with best practices for rapidly releasing and integrating on new detection code in the wild, including continuous deployment and automated testing.
To be successful, this leader needs to hold the team accountable for the deployment of new bot markers through to production, as well as actionable intelligence delivered successfully to the rest of the company, while nevertheless allowing room for creative experimentation and research. This lead will coordinate and collaborate across various teams at White Ops, working with the product team to refine requirements and roadmap, and working with the customer success team, and at times the customer directly, to research and address potential false positives, false negatives, and new detection leads into the marker development process.
In the first 6 months, the expectations are to:

  • Work with the detection team and the CTO to implement a process for managing detection research and the development of new signal and detection algorithms
  • Manage the delivery of new native mobile signals and markers for human verification in the Android OS environment
  • Lead and manage the research into defining new threat models for manipulating social network activity, including studying applicable malware
  • Work with the detection team to build a continuous deployment process for rapidly iterating on sampled signal code in production, with feedback loops of one hour or less
  • Work with the detection and data teams to define and build analytics and dashboards for monitoring activity of detection markers in production and testing

Long term, the aim is for the Detection Team Manager to:

  • Work with the data science lead to define new methods, processes, and architectures for further integrating applied machine learning to the R&D of new markers
  • Build a team that can effectively identify new behaviors and threat models in both existing and new environments
  • Build a team that can continuously explore new and creative ways to collect technical signal, including partnerships across industries
  • Manage a team that can publish impactful research and observations on non human activity on the web
  • Work with the CTO, detection team, and product team to continuously explore new product use cases and markets in security for the application of human verification
  • Work with the CTO to define and build a threat intel program that supports the continuous development of threat models, markers, and signals, as well as an active red team

We understand it takes a diverse team of highly intelligent, passionate, curious, and creative people to solve the challenges involved in protecting the Internet. Our dynamic team of humans have incredible perspectives to share, just as we know you do, and we take great pride in being an equal opportunity workplace.
