The Role

BuzzFeed, the world’s leading independent digital media company, is looking for a Vice President, Corporate Controller. As the Controller, you will undertake all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, management of the external audit, and taxation, as well as the development and administration of internal control procedures.

You are an experienced accountant with expertise in technical accounting, reporting and process control, and a business partner with the ability to lead change and achieve results through collaboration and persuasion. You have a native understanding of accounting for both digital and studio content, an appreciation of BuzzFeed's unique position in the marketplace, and prior managerial experience. You have an ability to build relationships, balance your roles as a business enabler and a steward of company resources and policies, and build strategic partnerships across our businesses, including branded content; entertainment and news production and distribution; and new revenue lines.

You will be based in Manhattan or Los Angeles and report directly to BuzzFeed’s Chief Financial Officer. You will lead a team of approximately 15 accountants.

You Will:

  • Oversee all accounting activities to include reporting of the Company's financials in accordance with US GAAP, regulatory guidelines and company policy and procedures
  • Manage the period end close process and financial reporting to management and Board
  • Lead a team of motivated accounting professionals through daily operational guidance, developing technical capabilities, and building relationships with business partners
  • Manage and analyze monthly management financial statements and reports to ensure integrity of financial information and partner with FP&A to ensure consistency with budget/forecast treatment
  • Design, document, and manage policies and procedures with respect to revenue recognition, accounts payable, accounts receivables, payroll, period end close and other accounting operations to ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Partner with Sales Ops to support deals and review sales compensation plans
  • Review contracts for financial and accounting implications to the business
  • Develop, monitor and enforce internal controls, policies and procedures across the company
  • Manage annual external audit process
  • Keep company current with any prescribed changes to technical accounting requirements
  • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, including calculation of provisions, maintenance of transfer pricing policies and filing for all appropriate tax credits and rebates
  • Partner with IT and HR Operations to ensure that Company has the appropriate information systems to meet its accounting and financial reporting and associated internal control requirements
  • Manage all financial transactions on a timely and fully accurate basis, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and expenses
  • Manage treasury, including cash, investments, banking and debt relationships
  • Manage equity transactions and capitalization table

You Have:

  • Minimum of 12 years of accounting experience with 7+ years in supervisory roles
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and CPA
  • Experience in both public audit (Big 4) and corporate accounting roles, with experience in digital media a plus
  • Previous experience in:
    • Managing the period end close process
    • Implementing financial systems
    • Managing annual audits and all tax-related matters
    • Recruiting, developing, training and mentoring a high performing accounting team
  • Passion for and a fluency with media and entertainment, news, and technology, and an affinity for BuzzFeed and its brands
  • Superior oral and written presentation abilities, including executive-level presentation skills
  • Strong collaboration orientation, with experience spanning functions and levels
  • Outstanding strategic instincts with experience linking strategy to actual operations and operational requirements
  • Strong leadership capabilities with ability to make quick, yet informed strategic decisions related to partnership and deal opportunities
