We are seeking a Corporate Controller to be the leader of our accounting team and drive all aspects of our financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as the development of internal control policies and preparation. We are headed through an exciting time at Cockroach Labs with increased revenue from our customer relationships. The Role
- Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, Payroll, and Revenue Recognition.
- Lead, grow, and develop the accounting team while remaining hands-on with day-to-day initiatives.
- Fluent in ASC 606 revenue recognition principles
- Drive monthly close process and prepare budget vs. actuals variance on a monthly basis.
- Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements, while overseeing monthly accounting close activities and ensuring compliance with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances.
- Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting and work with auditors to complete annual financial audit.
- Development and maintenance of accounting systems and policies and procedures.
- Develop and document internal controls, policies, and procedures related to financial reporting and compliance.
- Responsible for the measurement and effectiveness of all processes internal and external, providing timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating condition of the company.
- Manage international accounting service to ensure proper and timely processing of accounting transactions and reporting of monthly results.
- Manage audits, tax advisors and 3rd party professional service providers.
- Coordinate with outside counsel for equity administration matters surrounding option stock grants.
- Calculate stock compensation expense using equity administration platform.
- Additional controller duties as necessary.
The Expectations
In your first 30 days, you will assess where we are with our finances and where we need to be. You will review the close calendar and supervise your first months close, with a view to providing feedback and suggestions for subsequent months. You will also familiarize yourself with the General Ledger and monthly financials, supervising the first months preparation.
Over these first 30 days, we believe that it's important for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology and our company. We want you to take this time to ask questions, build relationships (internal and external), and generate ideas on how to lay the foundation for your team’s success. This foundation will help you will understand how to navigate our environment and give you a grasp of the current business model and what you need to ensure your team's success.
After 3 months, you'll be fully integrated into the team. For example, you will now own the General Ledger, Treasury and Technical Accounting functions to include oversight of the Accounts Receivable and Payable functions. You will also take on the additional responsibility of reviewing the General Ledger and Financials to ensure compliance with GAAP. At this time, you should have a solid understanding of the company’s accounting operations, systems, and procedures to be able to make an impact.
You
- Strong financial modeling, planning, forecasting, and analytical skills.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel/Google Sheets/Quickbooks and have implemented Netsuite and been responsible for creating and approving journal entries.
- Experience with Enterprise Software companies and a strong understanding of SaaS Bookings based business model and operating metrics
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and experience managing the accounting function.

- Intellectually curious and a problem solver.
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset: enjoys the challenge of a fast-paced, complex environment and is highly motivated, proactive and detailed-oriented.
- Strong ethical standards and integrity.
- CPA preferred.
- 8-10 years of experience in an accounting/finance role working in quickly growing companies.
- Prior experience leading fundraising diligence efforts, ideally at a growth stage company is a plus.
