At January, we work to ensure that borrowers who fall behind on debt are treated with dignity. Owing to outdated processes and bad actors, traditional debt collection is rife with harassment and fraud. Our products tackle this by helping financial institutions modernize collections, giving borrowers simpler and more compassionate ways to get back on track.

As the Director of Finance, you will help us become an industry leader by ensuring we have the necessary resources and controls in place. You’ll own FP&A, accounting, and financial operations. Ultimately, your work will enhance our internal decision-making, particularly as it relates to resource allocation. You will report directly to our CEO. You will collaborate closely with numerous internal stakeholders, such as Sales, Product, Account Management, Talent, and our leadership team.

Your impact:

  • Develop financial operations. You’ll ensure that the team incorporates financial controls and considerations into relevant day-to-day operations and decision-making, product planning, advocating for finance, and product profitability where it makes sense.
  • Own FP&A. You’ll help us set and achieve our revenue targets and relevant goals, develop tools to provide critical information to the leadership team and relevant stakeholders to improve our decision-making, monitor and share core performance metrics, work with the Director of People on payroll and employee benefits matters, and more.
  • Oversee accounting. You’ll work with our accountants to close our books in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Assist in the development of internal and external communications. For instance, you may assist the leadership team with board-level communications.
  • Help drive strategic and operational initiatives as the business grows and scales, including working with leadership to set our company-wide OKRs.

You may be a fit if you:

  • 5+ years of experience in a finance role (FP&A) with experience building new systems from scratch
  • Ideal candidates have worked at a venture-backed, high-growth startup that they helped scale
  • Familiarity with accounting, including a thorough understanding of GAAP
  • Proficiency in advanced modeling skills, particularly with SQL, is highly desirable for this position
  • Resourcefulness, thrives at making order out of (an appropriate amount of) chaos
  • Process obsession, an appreciation that over time superior processes lead to better outcomes
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, ability to communicate with all stakeholders and team members, regardless of seniority and department
  • An operational mindset, willingness to get their hands dirty and gain exposure to all facets of our business

What we can offer you:

  • Hybrid and remote work opportunities, allowing you to work in the office and from home on a schedule that works for you
  • Pet-friendly office (only in NYC, for now!)
  • Competitive equity packages, giving you a chance to feel true ownership of your work
  • Unlimited PTO so you can take the time you need to rest and recharge
  • Flexible work hours for better work/life balance
  • Generous new parent leave program for all employees to enjoy bonding time
  • Free lunches for team socializing activities
  • Annual learning and development budget to invest in your professional growth
  • 401k so you can invest in your future
  • Gym membership reimbursement
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Free access to the mental well-being platform Spring Health plus 3 free virtual sessions with a Spring Health licensed therapist.
  • Commuter benefits for your travel to/from the office
  • Endless growth opportunity and the ability to take on new and exciting challenges

January believes in doing its part to help close the wage gap that continues to plague much of the US workforce. We offer transparent and equitable compensation packages to all existing and future January team members.

At January, we believe that diversity of outlooks, demographics, identities, and life experiences enable companies to build the best products. More diversity means more empathy with different types of people. This matters a lot for us, since so many borrowers in financial distress with whom we engage come from underrepresented backgrounds. An Insider's view of January

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

January’s culture prioritizes a healthy work-life balance allowing me to remain productive as a new mother. With a leadership team that leads by example and team members that mutually respect each other’s personal lives, I feel comfortable taking time off as needed to prioritize my mental and physical well-being or personal obligations.

Danielle

What projects are you most excited about?

One project I'm working on that is super exciting is implementing a machine learning model to improve debt payoff outcomes. Not only is this a technically interesting and challenging project, but it's likely to impact revenue. We're hoping that through insights gained, we can apply similar strategies to other predictive models in the future.

Linya

How does the company support your career growth?

We pride ourselves on offering ongoing feedback to support career development and growth opportunities. We have clearly defined career tracks with competencies that give our teams clear goals to work towards. We go beyond just standard performance reviews by operating with a performance culture that allows our teams to consistently hit their goals.

Vanessa

How do your team's ideas influence the company's direction?

The team’s ideas have shaped the core of our business’s culture, vision, strategy, and more. Frequent feedback – a cultural value – underpins how we operate. Structured and unstructured feedback mechanisms, including one-on-ones, bi-monthly reflections, agility-improving surveys, and post-mortem conversations facilitate regular idea sharing.

Jake

CEO

What's something quirky about your company?

A bunch of folks on the team are into creative activities outside of work (e.g. painting, archery, candle making, painting rocks, etc.). We have a painting and photos the team made hanging up in the office!
