Overview

The Payroll Director is responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of all payroll functions to include high level standards while in compliance with all state and federal regulations. This position is responsible for designing short-term and long-term strategies for continuous improvement in payroll operations. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the payroll function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the system owner for the two payroll related systems, Workday, and Cast & Crew. Involved in systems upgrades and user testing
  • Directly responsible for the payroll department’s running structure and to provide oversight to ensure efficient customer service, assess operational risk and manage the vendor relationships
  • Maintains payroll information by designing systems; directing the collection, calculation, and entering of data
  • Updates payroll records by reviewing and approving changes in exemptions, insurance coverage, savings deductions, and job titles, and department/ division transfers.
  • Prepares reports by compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, and nontaxable wages.
  • Maintains payroll guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintains employee confidence and protects payroll operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Maintains payroll staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Maintains payroll staff job results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Ensures required reports are filed and payments are made to government agencies and other organizations/individuals
  • Understanding and implementation of payroll system requirements and revisions
  • Serves as liaison with other departments, units or locations in the resolution of pay problems
  • Evaluate reporting systems and HRIS processes
  • Ensure payroll processing is running smoothly and accurately. Establishes and implements procedures to improve business processes and gain efficiencies.
  • Sustains a strong association between human resources and finance/accounting to guarantee that their payroll procedures, information and needs are aligned for optimum efficiency.
  • Leads the team on all Payroll projects and ensures timely delivery of assigned initiatives.
  • Create queries and reports in Workday and Cast & Crew for the team to streamline payroll functions and assist with data analysis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 5-7 years Proven experience as a payroll director or similar role
  • 3-5 years of WORKDAY (software) experience required
  • Current knowledge of payroll procedures and related laws
  • Excellent understanding of multi-location payroll and taxes
  • Familiarity with payroll software/ HRIS
  • A keen eye for detail
  • An analytical mind and good math skills
  • Outstanding communication skills (written and oral)
  • Organizational and leadership skills
  • BS/BA in Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources or related field; professional certification (e.g. CPP, CPM) is a plus
