About the Role:

Betterment’s Investing Team provides the domain expertise required to build all product solutions that deliver financial advice to its customers. Integrated closely with the Trading, Operations, and Product teams, we engage in rigorous R&D and iteration to create long-term value and efficiencies for our clients. As a Quantitative Investing Researcher, you will primarily be responsible for providing investing domain expertise, financial markets research, and economic analysis in support of the Betterment for Business (B4B) 401(k) service. You will be reporting to our Director of Investing, Betterment for Business. 

We’re seeking someone analytically minded, with a deep passion for making investing better, combined with a strong intention to detail. To be successful in this role, you will be curious and hands-on. We’ll look to you to be creative and instinctive, while demonstrating the ability to support your arguments with empirical evidence. You will be joining a team that cares deeply about the product, doing the right thing, and motivating others to always keep the common goal in mind.

A Day in the Life:

• Support the Director of Investing with writing, researching and analyzing content on the performance of financial markets and the macroeconomy and how both have driven recent returns on all Betterment investment portfolios
• Be a point of contact for our B4B team for questions that fall within our domain 
• Identify new opportunities for Betterment to better serve its B4B customers through our advice features and investment strategy.
• Analyze, test, improve, and develop asset allocations for model portfolios
• Identify and test improvements to our algorithmic advice models, portfolio management strategies, rebalancing algorithms, risk management approaches, and/or tax overlay strategies using a B4B specific lens   
• Build strategic and trusted relationships with our Trading, Product, and Engineering teams to test new ideas and bring investing products to life

What We’re Looking for: 

• Experience in the financial industry, ideally at a bank or large asset management firm
• Strong knowledge of R, Python, Julia or another statistical computing language
• Experience writing production-quality, scalable, efficient code for reliable testing
• Familiarity with financial datasets across different asset classes
• Clear and effective communication skills (both verbal and written), especially for presenting complex quantitative research to experts and non-experts

What Happens Next?

We expect to take a few weeks to review all applications. If we would like to spend more time with you, you will hear from us to arrange next steps. You can expect 3-4 sets of conversations, all remote, with your future colleagues in the weeks following your application.

Throughout the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our interview questions will be behavioral, aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. We may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, depending on the role, as we aim to collect a robust set of data points throughout the interview process.

On average, it takes us around 4-6 weeks to complete the interview process. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
