The Senior Director of Revenue Accounting will be responsible for leading the Revenue Accounting team in ensuring that revenue is recognized in accordance with US GAAP, reviewing customer contracts for their impact on the financial statements, staying current with relevant technical accounting literature, preparing technical accounting memos for complex revenue arrangements, and overseeing the financial statement close process for all related accounts.

The Senior Director of Revenue Accounting will be a key leader in the Controllership and partner closely with Enterprise Finance Operations, Business Operations, FP&A, Sales and External Reporting and Technical Accounting in driving results across various initiatives including developing the infrastructure to support future business needs in a fast-paced, dynamic, and high-growth SaaS organization.

What you’ll do:

  • Own the monthly revenue close process and requirements for multiple revenue streams, including the review of new contracts, complex account reconciliations, monthly analytics, and internal controls, ensuring revenue and all related accounts including deferred revenue, accounts receivable, allowance for credit losses and capitalized sales commissions are recognized in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Maintain revenue recognition policies, managing the research, evaluation, and documentation of significant and non-standard customer contracts to ensure compliance with company policies and appropriate revenue recognition standards under ASC 606.
  • Provide clear and concise technical guidance on new and emerging accounting and reporting issues from regulatory bodies (FASB, AICPA, SEC, NAIC, and IASB) to internal business partners and management where there are implications for revenue (or related) accounting topics.
  • Maintain flexibility and be responsive to changing business needs, providing thought leadership and expert guidance on all revenue recognition aspects relating to new product initiatives, business expansion, internal and external financial reporting changes, and regulatory and tax compliance needs.
  • Establish revenue recognition metrics with FP&A and Sales teams to evaluate periodic performance.
  • Collaborate with FP&A and Sales teams to improve visibility to revenue recognition issues or changes that impact forecast precision.
  • Collaborate with Deal Desk and Sales teams to train, educate, and collectively evaluate complex customer contract terms and their implication on revenue recognition.
  • Train and develop Revenue Accounting team members to ensure appropriate understanding and application of accounting guidance and company-specific policies and practices.
  • Champion process improvements and automation initiatives to reduce legacy manual processes within revenue accounting and reporting functions.
  • Ensure effective design and operation of internal controls over revenue accounting and reporting and related estimates as part of internal SOX compliance program.
  • Respond to interim review and year-end audit requests from internal and external auditors.

Skills and knowledge you should possess:

  • 15+ years of progressive experience within accounting and revenue operations organizations including ~10 years of leadership or management positions in the revenue recognition function
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting; CPA with a minimum of five years of Big 4 public accounting experience
  • Experience with multi-national public SaaS companies
  • Strong technical accounting skills, with in-depth knowledge of ASC 606, and related revenue recognition pronouncements under US GAAP
  • Thorough understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and application to revenue-specific risks and controls
  • Working knowledge of SEC reporting and disclosure requirements, including recent developments and focus areas
  • Experience and understanding of foreign currency accounting
  • Strong experience in revenue accounting transformation, system migrations, and new system implementations; clear understanding and experience on how automation, integration and scaling can directly impact workload and sustainable growth
  • Experience with Zuora Revenue preferred
  • Significant experience working with sales organizations in a high pressure, fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with and influence management and contributors at all levels of the organization and across functions
  • A proactive leader and effective coach committed to the development and engagement of their team
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, work independently, prioritize competing workloads, and manage the deliverables from business partners and team members
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills; active listener
  • Experience with data analytics tools such as Alteryx, Looker and Tableau is a plus
