The Role:

The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) will help build out Newsela’s long-term strategic plans and drive operational execution of DEIB efforts internally. Reporting to the Vice President of DEIB, you will lead a team of two (to start) and will influence leaders across the company to drive meaningful and measurable progress in advancing true equity in the workplace and in K-12 education. You will work with business leaders across the company to drive and measure the success of DEIB initiatives, and will help continue to evolve company systems, processes, and policies that support Newsela’s DEIB goals. You will be responsible for executing Newsela’s diversity strategy, including partnering with the People team and hiring managers to attract, develop, and retain a diverse talent base. You’ll also help develop action plans for leaders across the company to implement behavior-changing DEIB practices to support company-wide engagement.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

We’re looking for a Director of DEIB who can take Newsela on the next phase of our DEIB journey. You will have the opportunity to partner with employees and executive leadership across the company to lead a holistic effort to cultivate a more diverse workforce, a fair and inclusive culture, and support equity in education. Your work will directly enable the upskill of our teams through DEIB workshops and learning experiences, and you’ll play a key role in guiding policy and systems updates at the company through a DEIB lens. You’ll also have the opportunity to mentor and develop your team, and support their growth within newly established roles.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have 10+ years of HR/DEIB experience and 5+ years of managerial experience, along with significant involvement in designing and implementing highly interactive learning programs. You’re either someone who has held diversity and inclusion leadership roles where you’ve demonstrated the ability to drive measurable behavior change; or you’re a leader of a business function (e.g. Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, etc.) who has led DEIB initiatives within it or in pro-bono situations who has a proven record of improving DEIB initiatives (like improving the diversity of talent, finding ways to create inclusive cultural environments, or building out mentorship and development programs for underrepresented groups). You leverage your ability to establish and maintain relationships with cross-functional stakeholders to collaborate on business needs, assess key learning opportunities, and understand how best to align DEIB solutions to impact priority business metrics. As a data-driven leader, you have proven success leveraging data to inform decisions and build strategy; you have experience in analyzing DEIB challenges and building research-backed, data-driven, creative solutions that accelerate the current DEIB journey for scalability. You are proactive in your approach, anticipate future organizational needs, and build to ensure you’re measuring the impact of DEIB solution
