Data Insights Engineering Intern (Summer 2019)

| Greater NYC Area

Data Insights is an entrepreneurial group of engineers that join Flatiron product teams to facilitate the process of market fit discovery, rapid prototyping, and iteration. We use engineering and data science tools to unlock the most value from our data possible. We talk with clients, work with oncology experts and code in Python, SQL, R, or whatever it takes to advance our goal of dramatically accelerating cancer research and improving patient care. (If you don’t know these tools already, you’ll learn them!) The mix of technology and client empathy in a single team puts our engineers in a unique position to generate disruptive ideas that take our product offerings to the next level.

In our first few years, the Data Insights team worked on tools designed to allow healthcare providers to easier manage cancer centers and treat patients. In the years since, we have integrated into teams working across the company to better partner with Life Sciences companies and develop tools to help accelerate clinical research.

As a Data Insights Engineering Intern, you will:

  • Be a self-starter that can rapidly iterate on products early in the development of product-market fit when there is a need for product, customer, and technology skills
  • Analyze and visualize oncology data for our clients in cancer clinics, academic institutions, and life sciences companies
  • Work through complex data pipelines using SQL and other data processing tools
  • Own technical customer relationships and ensure clients receive the most value possible from Flatiron products
  • Develop knowledge of healthcare industry trends and data
  • Learn SQL, data processing, and gain an understanding of how healthcare data works

About you:

  • You are graduating between December 2019 and June 2020 from a technical field of study (e.g., engineering, computer science, etc.), or you’ve done programming/scripting on your own
  • You are passionate about our mission to improve cancer care through data and technology
  • You are a quick learner and can easily pick up new programming languages
  • You are a clear and confident communicator who can break down complex data analyses to tell a compelling story
  • You understand how to identify major pain points in a user’s workflow, quickly build prototypes to address challenges, gather feedback from the user, and rapidly iterate
  • You are self-motivated and able to independently prioritize and address problems in a highly ambiguous environment
  • You have experience coding in a data-centric programming language (e.g. SQL, Pandas)

Good if you have experience with (but we can teach you):

  • SQL and databases
  • Python, version control, product development processes
  • Healthcare industry knowledge/context (especially oncology-specific knowledge)

An Insider's view of Flatiron Health

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The most exciting part of being in my company is solving a real problem at scale through serious collaboration. Oncologists, software engineers, statisticians, business folks, etc. all have to come to the table together, as equals, to figure this one out. And we are doing it.

Amy

Chief medical Officer

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

An engineer and oncologist work together over several weeks to build an algorithm from a naive prototype to a highly specialized and flexible rule set that can accurately represent the lines of therapy for 95% of patients within a specific disease subset.

Abhishek

Software Engineer

How does the company support your career growth?

As engineering manager, I am invested in the professional development of the people I work with. I train team members by pulling them out of their comfort zones to the uncomfortable territory. At Flatiron, it is one of our values - greatness and comfort rarely co-exist.

Kevin

Software Engineering

What is your vision for the company?

At Flatiron, we believe that learning from the experience of every cancer patient is an imperative — it is the key to accelerating research and continuing to improve the quality of care. Our mission is to serve cancer patients and our customers by dramatically improving treatment and accelerating research.

Zach Weinberg

Co-Founder, President and COO

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

Instead of studying the cells, I now have the opportunity to write about the patients. I can tell their stories through the research lens and enable them to advance clinical cancer research through their experiences. I certainly never lose sight of the human behind the cell anymore.

Rana

Medical Writer
