The Flatiron Tech Apprenticeship is a paid, full-time four-month program at our Soho HQ that enables professionals from historically underrepresented communities and non-traditional backgrounds to develop their technical skills, gain industry experience and grow their careers as software engineers.

This program aims to increase of representation of women and minorities in tech. We encourage all historically underrepresented professionals in tech to apply. This includes but is not limited to: Black, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, professionals with disabilities, veterans and professionals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

About us

We’re building technology that accelerates cancer research and improves patient care. The growing team at Flatiron Health is made up of more than 500 software engineers, quantitative scientists, oncologists, product managers, designers, visionaries and more — all from different industries and backgrounds working together to solve problems that matter.

Our engineering team

The Flatiron Health engineering team builds and runs data processing pipelines, algorithmic and human-operated data curation tools and customer-facing data analytics and visualization tools. We build systems that clean, structure and understand clinical-level patient data as we build the largest, most comprehensive set of oncology data intelligence. We scale pipelines to handle the world's oncology data with creative engineering solutions to open-ended oncology data problems.

Our OncoCloud suite is built to meet the technology needs of the community practice of the future: operationally efficient and prepared to thrive in the world of value-based care. Over 2,500 clinicians at more than 800 sites across the country have chosen Flatiron as their long-term technology partner. To grow our reach and have a bigger impact, we need your help.

What you’ll do

As part of Flatiron’s apprenticeship program, you’ll gain hands-on experience in:

All aspects of the software development life cycle

Testing and deployment best practices

Working with the team of skilled engineers to receive and provide code review and design feedback

Version control systems and collaboration tools that allow for developing software in a team environment

Agile methodologies of software development

Working cross-functionally with people outside of software engineering, like product managers, designers and clinical specialists

Multiple software stacks and full stack development, as well as data processing, data analytics and data visualization

You’ll also get exposure to what software teams across Flatiron are working on, including front-end development, machine learning, DevOps and data science

Our Apprenticeship Bootcamp: You’ll join Flatiron’s Engineering Bootcamp program, supplemented by deep dive sessions on the Flatiron technology stacks, developer efficiency and tooling. You’ll learn the ins and outs of Flatiron development, team culture and home-grown tooling, along with the necessary skills to succeed in their day-to-day work.

Learning and Development: In addition to developing technical skills, you will develop transferable professional skills through hands-on training delivered through Flatiron University. Our courses will equip you with the tools to take your leadership, communication, feedback, productivity and creativity skills to the next level.

Mentorship and Networking: As part of the apprenticeship program, you’ll be paired with a mentor who will be your guide throughout your time at Flatiron. You’ll also find tons of opportunities to network with other apprentices and Flatiron employees from cross-functional engineering teams.

Who you are

We’re looking for passionate, driven professionals who can help us build the future of cancer care. To join our growing team, you’ll need:

Relevant education or training that includes one of the following: An associates degree in a technical field, graduation certificate from a coding bootcamp, tech development program or equivalent, or a BA/BS degree in any field from an accredited college or university

Industry work or a portfolio with working demos that showcase experience building things in at least one high-level coding language, including but not limited to: Java, JavaScript, C#, Ruby or Python

Two years or more of prior work experience in any field

Enthusiasm for working on a multi-disciplinary team

Passion for improving healthcare through technology

The ability to communicate effectively and convey your thoughts in a clear manner, with an interest in further honing these skills in a technical environment (especially as it relates to explaining technical topics to people of varying technical ability)
