The Role:

The Newsela Legal team is looking for a talented and seasoned lawyer to join our growing team. The VP, Associate General Counsel,  will build and lead various legal functions across Corporate, Compliance, Employment. You are experienced in and will be responsible for corporate (securities, corporate governance, M&A, investments), compliance (enterprise risk assessments, policies, trainings), and employment (ER, HR, benefits, equity) legal matters. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will be a key counselor to Newsela’s executive team and the Board of Directors. You will grow your team over time to meet the needs of our rapidly growing and complex business, and you’ll serve as a leader and mentor to your team.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

In this newly created role, you will be a founding member of the Newsela Legal leadership team and will have the opportunity to build a best-in-class legal team. You will be recognized and appreciated for your subject matter expertise, but also have the opportunity to develop skills in, and own, a wide variety of matters as additional legal needs arise. As someone with meaningful experience at public companies, you will bring those skills to help Newsela move to its next stage in growth and drive immediate impact across the company. Your work will directly contribute to growing Newsela’s impact on the K-12 market, and helping make learning more accessible and engaging for all students.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have 12+ years of experience as a corporate securities or corporate transactions attorney, with a mix of top-tier law firm and in-house experience at a public company preferred. You have demonstrated success working across a wide range of legal matters, including legal oversight for all corporate reporting and obligations, and corporate governance experience (including management of board and committee). You have strong strategic negotiation skills and experience managing transactions and driving cross-functional execution. In addition to your legal expertise, you’ve developed people-management skills and approach everything with a team building mindset. You’re an excellent oral and written communicator, able to synthesize and present complex ideas simply and understandably to employees at all levels, as well as the executive team and the Board. You’re also comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-energy environment and capable of dealing with and navigating ambiguity.
