Office Style/ Location: Open office space in Chelsea, NYC

The Work

You’ll be part of a small, yet powerful compliance and legal team advising our senior leadership, business development, workforce solutions, and payroll department on various commercial, contractual and employment/labor law related matters. Our days are heavy in cross-collaborative engagement, so if you’re looking to keep co-worker interaction to a minimum, this is unlikely the position for you.

An average day might include answering questions about labor laws, negotiating a services contract (MSA) along with our business development team, managing an independent contractor compliance program, and delivering updates on forthcoming paid sick leave laws from around the country. From time to time, you’ll work with the engineering team to develop a more streamlined workflow for contracts and documents within our back office technology. Variety is the constant.

Other responsibilities

  • Lead the drafting, reviewing, negotiating of MSA and other corporate transactions;
  • Manage corporate registrations with secretary of states and all regulatory agencies;
  • Drive the review of operations, activities, and documentation to ensure compliance in relevant areas (e.g. employment and labor law), while developing a strategic plan to address future changes;
  • Manage vendor relationships for services like insurance and health benefits;
  • Partner with the Compliance Manager to develop incident and issue resolution workflows;
  • Support the internal team when escalation is necessary;
  • Develop training programs for product offerings to all internal team members; and
  • Maintain templates of agreements and related compliance/legal documentation to reflect our service processes and product offerings.

You’ll report to the Head of Legal and once you’re leveled up, you’ll be expected to help lead the development of the department with guidance from the senior leadership team. There is high-growth potential with this role – so if you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get started, we’re waiting for you.

The Candidate

This is an ideal position for an attorney seeking in-house work after a few years at a firm, private company, or government agency. Our ideal candidate has experience with both commercial contracts and employment/labor/HR and is keen to expand their experience in these areas. They are open-minded, creative, and not afraid of a challenge - they thrive in a team environment but work well on their own too. They also manage projects and their time like a boss.

Education + Experience

  • JD degree from an accredited US law school
  • At least one state bar license
  • Firm experience a plus, but not required
  • At least 2-3 years of legal experience in the following:
    • Employment and labor law
    • Commercial contracts negotiation
  • Incredible analytical and communication skills. You can distill complex information into easily digestible formats.
  • On-point research capability. If the answer is out there, you’ll find it, even if it means making a few phone calls.

It’s mighty awesome if you have-

  • Human resources management experience.
  • A familiarity with the staffing and contingent workforce management.
  • Successful development and leadership of a team(s) - whether professionally, as a volunteer, or as part of a sports team.

Other qualities

  • Self-leadership/Integrity. You get your work done when you say you will, or you have the integrity to let the team know when you can’t.
  • Responsiveness. You answer emails in the same way you want people to answer yours – thoroughly and within a reasonable time.
  • Bring your whole self to work. Our team is full of people with a variety of interests from film and music, to deep-sea diving, and volunteering with developmentally-challenged people. We don’t want you to check your interests and personality at the door, we want you to bring your whole self to work, share it with us and help us become a better company because of the value you add.
  • You can laugh at yourself.

Salary: $75 – $90k DOE

Benefits:

  • Monthly stipend for medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Crunch gym membership
  • 20 days of paid vacation
  • Commuter benefits
  • Nespresso coffee machine + basically unlimited coffee
  • Team Fridays (wine/beer/other beverages and games, semi-monthly for the last hour on Friday)
  • Occasional office puppies
