The Petal mission

Petal’s mission is to bring financial opportunity and innovation to everyone.

We're pioneering a new approach to credit, enabling Petal Card* applicants to leverage their banking history, in addition to their credit history, to establish their creditworthiness. Our proprietary Cash Scoring technology takes applicants’ income, spending, and savings into account and is helping traditionally underserved consumers across the United States access honest, simple and responsible credit, even if they’ve never had it before.

We bring the same ingenuity to Petal Card products. Our simple and intuitive app gives members access to credit score tracking, budgeting tools, subscription management, and automated payment options—everything they need to make financial progress.

Now more than ever, Americans need help improving their credit safely, responsibly, and affordably. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, apply now, and let’s change this trillion-dollar industry together.

At Petal, we're looking for people with kindness, positivity, and integrity. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and potential will stand out—and set you apart—especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns. At Petal, we welcome diverse perspectives from people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions.

The Corporate Counsel role

We’re seeking a hardworking, emotionally intelligent, articulate, organized, scrappy and pragmatic Corporate Counsel who is excited to be a true in-house generalist in a mission-driven, fast-growing fintech company.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of corporate/transactional legal experience, which may include venture capital, tech transactions, leveraged/structured finance, capital markets, M&A or other general corporate law experience relevant to Petal’s business. The ideal candidate will also have a growth mindset and passion for learning new things, will be a solutions-oriented, creative thinker, and will be comfortable in a fast-scaling startup environment. The ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across diverse, cross-functional stakeholders, both internal and external, is essential.

Key responsibilities:

  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including partnerships and business development, technology licensing, data licensing and other tech transactions, services agreements, NDAs and a wide range of other commercial arrangements
  • Lead contract management efforts, including ownership of contract management platform and development, implementation and refinement of forms, processes and procedures
  • Support strategic transactions, including equity raising, debt financings and corporate development
  • Contribute to corporate governance and secretarial functions
  • Assist with corporate insurance program and other risk management efforts
  • Help with management and resolution of commercial disputes
  • Build close relationships with business partners across the company, including members of the product, engineering, marketing, business development, risk, operations, compliance, finance and people teams
  • Manage outside counsel and vendors as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of Petal’s business and objectives, as well as relevant legal and regulatory developments
  • Engage in or lead various other projects and duties on an ad hoc basis

Characteristics of a successful candidate:

  • 3-4 years of experience, including at least 2 years in a corporate/transactional practice at a leading law firm
  • J.D. degree and admitted, active and in good standing with the NY bar
  • Problem-solving versatility and comfort in ambiguity — we are innovating rapidly and doing things others haven’t done before; you must be able to navigate uncertainty, figure things out quickly, and propose well-developed, actionable solutions with less-than-perfect information
  • Superior attention to detail — excellent work product is essential
  • Outstanding communication skills — you can present complicated issues clearly and succinctly, enabling effective collaboration with cross-functional internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Positivity and high EQ — you look on the bright side while being authentic, confident but low-ego, reflective and self-aware; you have a growth mindset, embracing constructive feedback and always seeking to improve
  • Strong self-management, drive and organization — you can work independently and juggle multiple projects simultaneously, without dropping any balls, and you are driven to create, improve and optimize processes

Nice-to-haves:

  • In-house experience at a technology/fintech company
  • VC/emerging company experience
  • Structured finance experience, especially with warehouse facilities, forward-flows and securitizations (and a big plus for credit card receivables)
  • Experience in the credit card / consumer lending industry, and related regulatory experience
  • Data privacy experience

An Insider's view of Petal

What's something quirky about your company?

At Petal we celebrate our big wins with an unlikely pairing of Popeyes and Prosecco. The origin story remains a mystery — but if we accomplish something really big you can bet that delicious fried chicken and bubbles are on the horizon.

Liza

Talent, Senior Manager

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

On the Payments team, we're working to increase the speed of payments processing for our members. This way we can deliver a real-time experience, reduce the likelihood of payment reversals, and allow faster access to a member's available credit.

Rohini

Senior Product Manager II

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started at Petal as a Credit Ops Analyst. Since then, I’ve had the chance to learn from industry experts, contribute to other sectors of the company, and further pursue my passions. I now have the privilege of leading the department where I got my start. Petal has allowed me to zero in on my purpose and continues to advocate for my development.

Allen

Risk Ops Manager

How do you make yourself accessible to the rest of the team?

Being accessible means that folks have multiple channels to engage with me & contribute ideas, give feedback, influence direction, & seek information. A few channels I use include office hours, monthly AMA's, Tech town halls, & ad-hoc check-ins. It means listening actively, assuming positive intent, asking constructive questions, & trusting others.

John

VP Engineering

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

As a PM, I work on delivering an engaging and frictionless app experience for users as they progress on their credit building journey. One of my favorite aspects of Petal’s culture is the egoless, team-first atmosphere that allows Petalians across functions ranging from Compliance to Design to make great things happen for our users together.
