MAJOR PURPOSES

Responsible for supporting MLB’s legal and policy efforts related to sports betting; supporting MLB’s compliance programs; and assisting with other legal matters as needed.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support MLB’s legal and policy efforts related to sports betting
    • Represent MLB’s interests in the legislative and rule making processes at the state and federal level through in-person meetings with legislators and regulators
    • Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations related to sports betting
    • Assist efforts to monitor and identify suspicious betting activity
    • Assist in development of MLB’s internal policies and educational programming
    • Train and update MLB and Club personnel on sports betting policies and legal developments
    • Investigate allegations of violations of MLB policies related to sports betting
  • Support MLB’s compliance programs
    • Enforce MLB’s existing compliance policies and work to develop new policies
    • Educate and train MLB personnel and third-party vendors regarding MLB compliance programs
    • Oversee disclosures and certifications related to MLB compliance policies
    • Track and respond to new matters as reported through MLB’s reporting tools
    • In coordination with other MLB departments, investigate allegations of violations of MLB compliance policies
  • Provide additional legal support for MLB’s security efforts as needed
  • Testify in internal and external hearings in support of MLB
  • Perform related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • J.D. and a minimum of 3 years’ legal experience required
  • Strong oral and written communication (including editing) skills
  • Professional demeanor, organized, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to manage deliverables with time-sensitive deadlines
  • This position is based in New York City but will require significant travel.
  • Experience drafting corporate policies and submissions to regulatory bodies is preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required and advanced knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel preferred
