Product Counsel
Check is a payroll-as-a-service API that lets you embed payroll directly in your vertical SaaS, HR, or time-tracking platform. Our API abstracts away the complexities of running payroll: tax calculation, remittance, and filing, plus the movement of money between companies and employees. This enables companies to easily build fully integrated payroll products to offer to their customers.
The Legal and Compliance team advises on Check’s obligations as a Money Services Business and licensed money transmitter, as well as a payroll processing platform. We guide our business and technical teams through the myriad regulations that govern payroll processing and money movement. Our objective is to provide users with certainty that Check’s compliance is best-in-class while unlocking opportunities for innovation and superior user experience.
We’re looking for our first product counsel to lead our effort to build an innovative and compliant product, in close partnership with our product and engineering teams.
In this role, you will:
- Be the expert on payments and general legal product compliance across the company
- Collaborate with Check’s Product and Engineering teams on Check’s legal and compliance obligations throughout the product lifecycle
- Maintain clear line-of-sight into all new product development and manage its impact on Check’s compliance and risk
- Assess the need for third-party vendors and evaluate vendor options to maximize compliance impact
- Stay abreast of regulatory developments in the areas of payments, risk, and general fintech compliance
- Liaise with our General Counsel, Payroll Compliance team, and outside counsel
Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates have:
- 3-5 years of experience as product counsel at a payments or fintech company
- Familiarity with launching products and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development
- Fluency in translating legal advice into actionable guidance for innovative product and business teams
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage projects effectively
- Sound and practical business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills
- A JD and active membership in at least one state bar
