The Legal & Policy Team is Snap’s dedicated in-house law firm, policy consultant, lobbyist, thought partner, and all-around advisor. This team helps Snap do the right thing the right way, make better decisions, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges, both external and internal. We partner with Snap team members on a wide array of matters, including privacy, product, IP, commercial transactions, corporate governance, employment, acquisitions, litigation, and policy, and social impact. We’re looking for a Sr. Privacy Counsel to join Team Snap! Working from our Los Angeles, CA headquarters, you’ll work on a small team responsible for managing the Snap privacy program globally. This job allows you to collaborate with members of Product and other legal teams, Engineering, Design, and other teams throughout the company to support Snap’s strong privacy practices, including its world-class privacy-by-design program.
What you’ll do:
Ensure Snap’s data processing globally complies with all applicable privacy laws, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), state and federal consumer protection and privacy laws
Manage or lead management of Snap’s and GDPR compliance privacy program
Partner with Product Counsel on complex privacy issues as they emerge in the development of new products and technologies
Help continue to improve over time Snap’s privacy-by-design requirements, working closely with Snap’s Privacy Engineering team
Analyze potential legal risks and regulatory requirements for new products and technologies
Conduct privacy due diligence reviews, privacy impact assessments, and integration plans for potential acquisitions and partnerships
Help draft public-facing descriptions of new products and technologies
Track and analyze proposed, pending and new domestic and global privacy and consumer legislation that could impact the business and recommend any potential or necessary modifications to practices, as well as advise Policy team on lobbying priorities
Conduct periodic privacy trainings across the company
Minimum qualifications:
J.D. from a nationally recognized law school
Active membership in the CA state bar, or otherwise qualified to be a registered in-house counsel under California’s multi-jurisdictional practice program (and valid RIHC license, if required)
8+ years of experience practicing law
Preferred qualifications:
Extensive experience advising on domestic and global privacy issues, including the GDPR, Privacy Shield, ePrivacy Directive, Section 5 of the FTC Act relating to privacy, anti-spam laws, cookies regulation, and the CCPA
Knowledge of global privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines, especially those relevant for ecommerce, ad tech, and Internet companies
In-house experience or law firm experience counseling clients on privacy matters
Ad tech experience is a plus
Excellent legal and business judgment and strategic thinking
Able to communicate effectively with stakeholders across the company on complex, multifaceted issues
Detail-oriented, business-friendly, and a team player, with an ability to think creatively and accommodate tight deadlines
Strong work ethic and able to work independently and collaboratively
