Job Description

Why Hearst Magazines?

Hearst Magazines is one of the largest publishers in the world, with more than 25 brands, including Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Harper's BAZAAR, Popular Mechanics, and Town & Country. We reach more than 150 million people every month in the United States alone.

But we're more than just our magazines. We engage our audience across all mediums and channels - print, digital, video and social - with sophisticated content creation, distribution and data capabilities. We create, package and sell products with cutting-edge technology and proprietary platforms. Together, we are reinventing publishing for the 21st century.

Your Impact

Hearst Magazines' Enthusiast & Wellness Group is looking for a creative and talented Content Strategy Manager to help execute our strategy across our reviews, service, and news teams. This role primarily supports Popular Mechanics, however there is potential to contribute to all brands within our group - Runner's World, Bicycling, BestProducts.com, Popular Mechanics, Biography.com, Men's Health, and Women's Health.

Combined, Popular Mechanics generates more than 8 million users each month who are as obsessed with the brand as we are. From space nerds to home DIYers, tech aficionados to outdoor enthusiasts, you'll be able to recommend content creation ideas that help and attract our niche audiences each and every day.

In the Enthusiast & Wellness Group, Search plays an important role and produces a healthy variety of traffic. We're seeking a confident and data-driven content strategist with a background in SEO to help drive our businesses forward. Working directly with our digital editors, you'll get a first look at new technology as it launches, be front-and-center for race coverage, get access to olympic-level athletes (in content and on staff), learn life-changing health news, and at times, you'll even get to help be part of our product testing process.

What You'll Do

While this is mainly a search-based role, we are looking for someone to consider how our content appears on external platforms and partner sites. We make decisions based on data at all levels, therefore the person in this role will be expected to collaborate with all Hearst teams and provide insights into content strategy across paid search, social media, membership exclusive content, features, and distribution.

Here's what you'll be responsible for:

  • Conduct ongoing keyword research that aligns with brand missions and business goals. We're looking for someone who thinks outside of search traffic metrics and understands the impact of content ideas on the group's revenue.
  • Optimize all content, from news and service, to product reviews and features, and work closely with our editors to ensure the user experience meets the search need. We use data to back all content recommendations.
  • Audit content for revenue success, performance, and user engagement using a variety of data analytics tools such as Google Analytics and Looker. We're a team that interprets failures as much as successes, so comfort with testing and iterating to improve efficiency is imperative.
  • Work directly in our CMS optimizing critical fields, grouping content, internal linking, assisting in user pathing, and improving formats.
  • Monitor search rankings, traffic, and impact for our priority reviews and service content. As the SERP continues to change, we expect this person to communicate developments and shifts to all impacted parties, positive and negative.
  • Keep a pulse on our brands' industries for news opportunities and emerging trends, and pitch those ideas to edit, backed by data, for potential coverage.
  • Stay abreast of algorithm updates and guide our teams through the impact on search for our brands.

Who You Are

  • 2-3 years of experience recommending content ideas, with a focus on search
  • A passion for data and understanding trends; proficiency in Excel and Google Analytics is a must
  • Interest in the Enthusiast & Wellness Group's brands and the topics we cover
  • The ability to manage content schedules and deliverables, and keep projects on track with targeted deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Must be able to collaborate and foster positive relationships with colleagues
  • Extremely detail-oriented and thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with Search Console
  • Working knowledge of SEO tools like SEMRush, Keywords Everywhere, and Google Trends
  • Experience working directly in a CMS

The base salary for this role is between $74,000 and $84,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
