Head of Marketing

We are a seeking a Head of Marketing, who will be responsible for defining the vision, strategy and execution for how we drive accelerated growth for the company. We’re looking for someone with a deep specialty in performance marketing, who is a data-driven marketing leader who wants to drive the Meetup business by dramatically increasing the number of people who join Meetup and become paying organizers. As Head of Marketing, you will play a pivotal role in building out a critical and also new function for the business, with a deep focus in performance marketing and a secondary focus on integrated marketing — one that sparks explosive growth in the number of organizers and members on the platform. The company has always been highly product-driven, but we are shifting our culture to ensure we build a best-in-class marketing function.
This leader will be both partnering with senior execs as well as directing the priorities of Meetup members. You'll need to be highly data-driven, a great communicator and collaborator, in addition to a great leader of people and projects. This critical role will be reporting directly to our CEO and you will be part of the company’s executive team. Role would also oversee external communications (driven by the Head of Communications) and social media. Over time, this role may also take on responsibilities for all strategic partnerships.
At Meetup, we are looking to build internal expertise and capabilities to do the real work ourselves, with only minimal, and targeted reliance on agencies. You will be asked to quickly assess our business’s needs and then hire the team to execute against your priorities. Driving meaningful lifetime value above customer acquisition costs will be a top KPI, as will figuring out how to drive multi-fold increases in our paying organizers and members.
What you’ll do:
- Create and champion marketing strategies that help people discover and understand Meetup and deepen their relationship with us
- Build strong relationships with executive colleagues as the owner of the Marketing function
- Build the internal data infrastructure to support marketing needs
- Deliberate planning and goal setting to drive engagement and growth across native social channels, paid media, and email
- Oversee the creation and publishing of relevant, original, high-quality content and plans for specific, timely digital marketing campaigns
- Drive best-in-class reporting to create visibility around digital marketing performance
- Build justification for significant (ideally in the 10s of millions over time) investment in marketing across the company
- Figure out how to grow our brand presence in an ROI positive process
- Improve brand awareness and public reputation through strategic communication and social media
- Develop clear customer segments and a strategy that helps us integrate marketing efforts with product solutions
You’re the ideal teammate if you have:
- Have 10+ years of experience working at a consumer tech or e-commerce company
- A marketing leader whose primary passion is brand definition and awareness is not our ideal candidate. We are looking for a growth-focused marketer, who loves driving revenue and can drive brand passion through revenue growth
- Deeply understand the dynamics of a two-sided marketplace, with specific focus in performing marketing and ROI
- Are intensely analytical, data-driven and focused on driving revenue
- Expertise in email marketing best practices is critical
- Have built best practice landing page optimizations, search, GDN, and affiliate marketing campaigns at break-even performance or better.
- Are known for building, leading and inspiring awesome teams
- Have a real methodology around A/B testing, but also know when testing is a waste of time
- Collaborate successfully with other senior leaders, and in particular product leaders. Building a tight marketing - product integrated approach will be critical.
- Think strategically but also willing to get your hands dirty
- Is a creative thinker who brings forward innovative ideas
- Is scrappy, knows how to do a lot with not a ton of spend. Won’t ask to do “big grand studies” type of work.
- Have a passion for bringing people together, creating community and changing lives
