Thrillist means fun. We're eaters, drinkers, travelers, and doers. We serve the curious and believe that new experiences are what drive the richest lives. We bring our passion, expertise, and taste to bear on the things that are truly worth your time and money. Life is for living, and that’s why we’re here. Today will be great.

Thrillist is looking for someone who knows and lives the New York bar and restaurant scene to nail our local coverage of New York City. You’ll know the best new spots people need to check, as well as how to get people excited about the old standbys, and overlooked gems that no one knows about. We’re looking for someone who intimately understands what people in NYC care about when looking for an amazing restaurant, when they need a bar with strong drinks, or when they’re just trying to get out and make the most of the whole damn city.

Thrillist is hiring a New York Editor who loves the city more than their own parents (sorry, Tony and Denise), and who can grow our flagship city edition with imaginative and original story ideas to report, sharp & witty writing, in-depth knowledge of SEO and what New Yorkers are searching for, as well as the smart use of data. We’re looking for someone who has experience working with freelancers and other editors, and thinks exploring New York’s intricacies is the most interesting way to spend every single day.

Responsibilities:

  • Expertly cover a rock-solid service journalism beat, telling people where to eat, where to drink, and what to do in and around New York City. In short -- tell New Yorkers what they need to know to get out and enjoy the greatest things NYC has to offer.
  • Maintain an expertise of the NYC food & drink scene, whether that’s fast-casual noodle spots, Detroit-style pizza joints, actually great Michelin-starred restaurants that don’t cost a week’s paycheck, secret cocktail bars, or classic, dirty dives.
  • Finding new and unique ways to cover bars, restaurants, and trends in a way that is distinct from other competitive sites
  • Manage a robust publishing workflow and calendar with strict deadlines and publish dates
  • Combine your knowledge of NYC with SEO data and insights to create stories that tell New Yorkers what they need to know, and when they need to know it
  • Manage and recruit a large roster of freelance writers, coaching them to deliver consistently excellent, on-brand stories that meet all internal best practices
  • Work with other editors, SEO-experts, social media, and email promotions teams to find the best ways to package and promote all of your stories
  • Manage a monthly freelance budget
  • Use Google Analytics, Chartbeat, and other customized data reports to draw meaningful insights about the work you do, the audience you speak to, and to develop strategies for growing our reach; communicate with other editors to identify and share trends and best practices
  • Work directly with video producers and editors to identify great video programming opportunities around NYC

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years in an editor role at a digital publisher
  • Have a broad depth of knowledge about NYC, and what’s great to eat, drink, and do across the boroughs
  • Be an enthusiastic champion of its unique cultural aspects and what New Yorkers, and visitors to this city, respond to
  • Work well in a team, as well as on your own
  • Strong writer who can communicate about restaurants and food in everyday language, free of cliches.
  • Experience working with freelancers in a professional capacity -- assigning stories, receiving and approving pitches, and providing feedback and edits to push stories to new heights, and create more efficient working relationships
  • Be able to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Openness to constructive criticism from peers and managers alike
  • Extensive knowledge of SEO, and how to promote stories via email and social media.
  • Knowledge or experience working with social video producers a plus, but not required
