Are you passionate about startups? Do you find yourself trying out new apps, and digital services? Do your friends tell you that you’re obsessively organized or very analytical? Do you try to help others without an expectation of anything in return?

Bloomberg’s venture capital firm, Bloomberg Beta, is looking to add a New York-based associate to our team.

We invest in young startups that make business work better, with a specialty in machine intelligence. We aspire to be the most transparent venture firm. We’re data driven, we’re intense, and we treat customer service as a religion — just like the rest of Bloomberg. We’re a small, feisty team that relishes stretching our resources a long way. (This role will primarily support the east coast partner and founders but will also collaborate with the entire team.)

You will succeed in this role if you’re knowledgeable and curious about the startups we back — in areas like machine intelligence, productivity tools, media, robotics, data, sales, and operations — and have a service focus. We want low-ego, high-throughput people who can do what needs doing.

Things you’d be doing:

  • Serving as a catchall handler — this job offers a healthy dose of unglamorous grunt work
  • Organizing (many) small group events with company founders and other partners
  • Using online research tools to gather information about new investments and technologies
  • Trying new products and sharing feedback with our team
  • Collaborating with other teams at Bloomberg, especially the engineering, data and events teams
  • Writing drafts of communications to our portfolio companies, partners, and others
  • Participating in all team meetings and expressing yourself when you feel we need to do better or to do things differently

You have:

  • Empathy, honesty, and integrity
  • Attention to detail and ability to do “finished work” — when a document is important, you make it letter perfect; you  know how to put together a presentation that looks professional.
  • A customer service mindset — you prioritize serving our founders and our team.
  • Tireless work ethic and accountability — if you say you’ll handle it, it’s as good as done. You also work fast.
  • Strong analytical skills and intellectual curiosity — you can reason through what makes sense to do and why.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • The ability to represent us with a wide range of personalities, so you present well in person and can foster trust quickly
  • Numeracy — you understand and can work with numbers
  • Self-direction — you are fine without step-by-step instructions or someone else telling you your priorities. You can anticipate with your spidey sense about what needs to get done.

You’ll get to spend time with some of the most promising startups in the technology industry, and with a venture firm that approaches its work in a one-of-a-kind way.

This could be a great role before grad school or if you’re interested in transitioning from consulting or operations to startups and looking for a one to two year experience to get indoctrinated.

Note: we believe great investors must spend time doing more than investing, so this is explicitly not intended as a role that offers a path to partnership in our fund. We have supported past team members in going into fast-growth startups, graduate school, or to other roles in the technology industry.
