Common is hiring a Chief of Staff to level up the effectiveness of our executive team. The Chief of Staff will work alongside our Founder and CEO, attending key meetings, and playing a major role in board and investor management.


This is a unique opportunity for someone with entrepreneurial drive, creativity, and strong work ethic to get experience building a growth-stage company from the inside. We are looking for a detail-oriented individual who can think around corners, anticipating problems before they arise and tackling them with urgency. We anticipate that the Chief of Staff will remain in that role for 2-3 years before taking a management position in the organization.


About the Role

The Chief of Staff is the glue that holds the senior management team together. From goal-setting to investor relations to strategic planning, the Chief of Staff manages key company processes, keeping the business moving forward and on track.


Spending most of the day alongside the company’s CEO and CFO, the Chief of Staff will tackle a variety of high- and low-level tasks. No two days will be the same. Adaptability and creativity are key traits of anyone taking on this role, with responsibilities including:


- Preparing for major meetings, including assembling board materials and presentations

- Taking notes and following up from key executive meetings

- Goal-setting

- Measurement and analysis of key metrics

- Representing the CEO in meetings when necessary

- Supervising the rollout of plans and directives across the company


While finance experience is not required, the Chief of Staff should be analytical and quantitative with a strong grasp of business metrics and goals. The Chief of Staff will spend a lot of time “in the numbers”, understanding the business’s performance and translating metrics into actionable goals and progress updates for the senior team and the board. Attention to detail is a must, as is the ability to speak and write clearly.


The Chief of Staff will report directly to the CEO.

  • Strong work ethic 
  • Can speak and write with clarity
  • Candidate must be detail-oriented and comfortable supporting ideas with both qualitative and analytical reasoning
  • Candidate must be very organized and be able to multi-task across large number of projects
  • Must be able to prioritize and organize against near and long-term goals effectively
  • Quick adaptation to an expanding variety of platforms, apps, and workflows in a fast-paced startup environment 
  • Can successfully organize and direct large groups of people
  • Must have a strong grasp of Excel
  • Good design intuition preferred
  • Business degree or MBA preferred
