The Role 

BuzzFeed News is hiring a Deputy Editor for its award-winning Tech and Business Desk.

This editor will play a leadership role on a crucial desk at one of the most dynamic and influential newsrooms in the world, where tech reporters have won the Mirror, Livingston, Polk, and Pulitzer prizes.

Our goal is to produce revelatory, accountability-focused journalism with an eye toward attaining real-world impact. We want to change policy, shape public discourse, and expose wrongdoers. And we also want to tap into the joy, weirdness, and wonder of the internet. 

This is a leadership role on a team with the highest goals — and the mandate and resources to pursue them to the limits. Together you'll shape every aspect of the tech desk, conceiving overall strategy, setting coverage priorities, guiding reporters, encouraging them to take their biggest swings, driving innovation, hiring blazing new talent, and building our nascent OSINT operation.

You will report to our Technology and Business editor, who is based in San Francisco, and work with reporters based across the country and around the world. Your location is negotiable. 

You Have

We are looking for candidates with a record of high-impact work on breaking news, enterprise coverage, investigative reporting, or feature writing; a knack for identifying ideas that can make a tangible impact on the world; and a deep understanding of how to craft stories to reach a wide audience. 

Candidates should value a diversity of voices across stories. They should love rigorous reporting, vivid narratives, and human stories. They should bring sharp thoughts about how BuzzFeed's tech coverage should look, with ideas for the big-picture direction of the team. This is very much a collaborative role, and we are a collaborative newsroom. ​​Part of what makes our newsroom so strong and vibrant is each individual's commitment to making us so. As such, you may be asked to share your knowledge with your colleagues through presentations or training, to screen and interview job candidates, or to take part in recruitment or networking events on behalf of the company.
