Role Description:

The Director of Infrastructure will be part of the broader Engineering team at Quartet and leader of the security, IT, operational, and reliability function to enable and support the team. This team develops and maintains the build pipelines, continuous integration tools, the cloud infrastructure of databases and services at Quartet, and the development of tools, automation, and processes they vend to the greater engineering team to help each team member own their systems from development, to testing, to deployment, to monitoring and alarming, and security and reliability of those systems.

This is a cross functional technical leadership position that requires strong technical ability, planning and coordination, and delivery of supporting tools and processes to help scale out the Quartet engineering team’s ability to delivery stable, quality software.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and optimize the software build approach
  • Test, deploy, maintain and improve software
  • Lead, grow, and maintain a team of cross functional engineers (i.e. Ops, IT, Security, QA)
  • Keep a customer focused mindset, prioritizing developer productivity and application uptime
  • Define and champion processes and procedures across the organization
  • Prioritize build tools and automation to accelerate development and increase code quality
  • Provide the high-level system monitoring with an understanding of reliability, availability, and failure management/mitigation needs
  • Provide disaster recovery solutions to maintain stable, secure, and compliant environments
  • Communicate, present, and defend opinions concerning build process, tools, and cloud service providers in a productive and diplomatic fashion
  • Optimize hosting and development costs
  • Work cross functionally with other engineering teams, influencing their development processes to support the overall health and integrity of our technical services
  • Own internal technical service desk support from IT, video conferencing, device provisioning, management, email, office support, and physical security

Candidate Profile:

  • Has built and run an operations function
  • Experience managing teams to deploy and maintain tools such as JIRA / Confluence, Github, Jenkins, etc
  • Experience managing teams to deploy extensive database and data warehouse functions to public (AWS, Azure, etc.) and private clouds
  • Experience leading and working with cross functional team members
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct research into issues and products as required
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language and visuals
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience directing an IT group focused on internal company needs
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

Minimum Required Experience:

  • Hands on experience building, deploying, and operationally supporting software projects
  • Experience with automation of developer activities
  • Proven successful track record in operational or similar role
  • Experience managing software projects in an agile fashion
  • Experience managing extensive cloud infrastructure in a mission critical environment
  • Understanding of coding principles, software life-cycles
  • Understanding of performance tools, security tools, metrics, and benchmarks
  • Strong opinions and passion on operational excellence
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Experience:

  • Experienced in a people management position
  • Proven industry experience building and maintaining software BS or MS Degree in Computer Science or equivalent field
  • Experience with software development methodologies and delivery
  • Willing to disagree and push for the best technical solutions even in the face of complexity yet strongly committed to whatever decision the team finally comes to
  • Experience with deployment methodologies (Docker, Jenkins)
  • Experience with Testing practices - unit, integration, and end-to-end
  • Experience with source control (Git)
