The Risk Management team creates competitive advantage for OnDeck through excellence in risk/reward optimization while simultaneously exercising its function of control in a vigorous and diligent fashion. The Risk Management team develops strategies and models to extend credit in a profitable manner to small businesses and their owners based on a strong understanding of the behavioral and commercial drivers of its customers and on sophisticated analysis of data. As the control function of OnDeck, the Risk Management Team ensures that that the portfolio, policies, strategies, new product features or operational processes at OnDeck are consistent with the risk appetite set by the management team and the board.

The Director of Portfolio Risk Management is responsible for the financial performance of OnDeck’s loan portfolio. Responsibilities include evaluating and reacting to all factors impacting portfolio performance (including credit, pricing, segmentation, underwriting policy and performance, macroeconomic changes and collections), and development of strategies to maximize performance of the existing account base across all product lines. 

This role will lead a team that creates and maintains an optimized picture of past, current, and future OnDeck portfolio position across key metrics to help ensure OnDeck financial attainment of strategic goals, identifies changes in performance that require action, and optimizes strategies targeting OnDeck’s existing customer base. In addition, the Director will influence OnDeck’s entire customer lifecycle by providing insights to key constituents enabling enhancements of products, processes and customer decisions.

As the Director of Portfolio Risk Management at OnDeck, you will:

  • Develop credit strategies for OnDeck’s existing customer base across all products, including management of existing loan relationships, renewal and cross-sell strategies.
  • Monitor key performance metrics relating to OnDeck’s portfolio, including identification of underlying factors impacting performance, and catalyze response across the organization.
  • Create predictive early detection credit deterioration capabilities using internal and external performance data.
  • Develop, implement and validate forecasts of key risk and financial performance outcomes using complex data and techniques including cohort and time series analysis.
  • Interface with Acquisition, Pricing, Product, Marketing, Finance, and Operations teams to build relationships, set goals and collaboratively solve problems, providing an actionable feedback loop to more effectively manage portfolio performance.
  • Ensure sound credit control by taking a pro-active approach to risk management within the risk guidelines of OnDeck.
  • Perform detailed analysis and interpret information to make recommendations to Senior Management on critical strategies including ad-hoc requests.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication of forecast results & interpretation; anticipating potential needs in an effort to establish and maintain good working relationships with key business stakeholders.
  • Lead a team in the delivery of the above, supporting development and success of direct reports.

Necessary qualifications for success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or other quantitative fields with at least two years of risk management experience in the financial services industry. Master’s degree preferred
  • 5-10 Years of related experience in Risk and/or Finance in the financial services industry, including development of customer-facing strategies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills as demonstrated by prior work experience
  • Deep working knowledge of analytical techniques and packages (including Excel, R, Python, SQL) enabling solution development, and support/evaluation of team’s work product
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing and presenting recommendations to Senior Management
  • Comfort in a fast-paced business-critical role that is a key contributor to OnDeck’s continued success
