Coinbase has built the world's leading compliant cryptocurrency platform serving over 73 million accounts in more than 100 countries. With multiple successful products, and our vocal advocacy for blockchain technology, we have played a major part in mainstream awareness and adoption of cryptocurrency. We are proud to offer an entire suite of products that are helping build the cryptoeconomy and increase economic freedom around the world.

There are a few things we look for across all hires we make at Coinbase, regardless of role or team. First, we look for signals that a candidate will thrive in a culture like ours, where we default to trust, embrace feedback, disrupt ourselves, and expect sustained high performance because we play as a championship team. Second, we expect all employees to commit to our mission-focused approach to our work. Finally, we seek people with the desire and capacity to build and share expertise in the frontier technologies of crypto and blockchain, in whatever way is most relevant to their role.

We're looking for a Director to join the Privacy team within the Security & Privacy Organization. You will partner with Legal to co-lead our global data privacy program - managing a tightly integrated team with a big mandate - and will be primarily responsible for tech-first implementation and evolution of our privacy governance and operations across the company. You will collaborate with senior leaders to drive data protection maturity, implement privacy controls, and ensure process excellence as we manage global privacy risk and compliance. You will also collaborate with product teams to implement privacy-forward, secure, and customer-centric product design, and drive cross-functional efforts to operationalize business objectives while minimizing privacy risks.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Level-up and scale Coinbase's global privacy and data protection program in partnership with Legal
  • Provide input on capability and maturity requirements to meet organizational needs, and inform the strategy to hire, build, or buy the right resources to meet those requirements
  • Define and mature the global privacy engagement model and operations across Coinbase regional entities
  • Sponsor and oversee large, cross-functional projects involving data governance, data protection, and data rights request tools and settings for our privacy-conscious customer base
  • Ensure your team is allocated to the most strategic business needs at the company by understanding the Company's strategy and priorities
  • Bring an automation-first mindset to champion and drive rollout of data protection tooling, privacy engineering concepts, and process improvements across privacy operations
  • Advocate for internal privacy principles, and identify creative ways to embed concepts of privacy by design into operational activities
  • Coach your team to define program plans, success criteria, and execute against their objectives
  • Serve as a point of escalation for your team, identify opportunities to address systemic challenges, and equip your team to drive issue resolution
  • Build and maintain relationships with critical stakeholders in a remote environment (e.g. Data, Legal, Product, Engineering, Marketing, Customer Experience, PeopleOps)
  • Lead by example and coach others to facilitate challenging discussions, present to stakeholders of all levels, and craft communication
  • Collaborate with Security to spearhead efforts both internally and among the broader privacy, cryptocurrency, and fintech communities to raise the data protection standards in our industry

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • 12+ years in privacy, security, or a related field, with 8+ years managerial experience
  • A strong ability to dig into personal data and data flows from a technical perspective
  • Master knowledge of privacy best practices, and working knowledge of major legal frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)
  • Demonstrated experience educating and working directly with executive leadership on strategic initiatives
  • Strong people and project management skills, including the ability to coordinate complex, company-wide plans requiring deep cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to translate privacy standards out of compliance speak and into functional requirements
  • Experience with technical implementation of privacy controls, ability to quickly spot privacy issues in complex security projects, working knowledge of cybersecurity concepts
  • Experience building risk management frameworks (preferably in security or privacy) to objectively measure privacy risks, monitor risk levels, and track remediation
  • Prior experience working on global projects, or in an international setting

Nice to haves:

  • Prior experience in the cryptocurrency, fintech, and/or software technology spaces
  • Familiarity with privacy laws specific to financial institutions (e.g., GLBA, RFPA) and global financial regulatory frameworks (e.g., AML/KYC compliance, PSD2)
  • Experience in cybersecurity, technical data protection expertise
  • CIPP or similar certification(s)
  • Experience working with new and emerging privacy frameworks, specifically with experience in LATAM and APAC
