Job Description

The Group Research Director is a creative problem solver that can develop systems of research to solve complex product and design problems from the tactical to the strategic. This leader will head the digital product research capability within Design to find product opportunities, concept test and ensure our products solve user needs and exceed expectations.

This insights savant is methodologically agnostic and will lead LearnVest and Northwestern Mutual to drive innovation and user experience across platforms. You need to be gifted at research (qualitative and quantitative) and lead the charge in ensuring that the sum of our studies become larger narratives.

Responsibilities 

  • Champion our end users through research to the product/tech/design organizations
  • Head our Digital Product Research group – Thought leadership, managing and mentor more junior researchers, design the organizational structure to raise the group to enterprise service level, and evolve the practice of research beyond just best practices and tools
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across design, product, engineering etc to understand their needs and develop research solutions to drive the business forward
  • Evangelize the role of UX Research through deliverables, workshops, communications, etc
  • Serve as an expert on our users by connecting dots across different research projects 

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in psychology, social science, statistics, business, marketing or a related field
  • 8+ or more years of experience leading research efforts with end users, 5+ year in management
  • Ability to craft research plans for complex product initiatives from top to bottom and communicate them
  • to senior leaders
  • Expertise in directing, designing and building complex surveys
  • Expertise at developing and directing interview guides and other qualitative research instruments
  • Ability to consult with stakeholders to think through problems and develop research plans that go beyond ad hoc projects
  • Experience managing ongoing and ad hoc research studies with shifting priorities
  • Translation of research data into consumable insights that tell a story about our business and products
  • Being an authority on the intersection of research and design
  • Don Draper level communication up to the C-suite
  • Proven track record of mentoring and managing more junior researchers
